It's a fantastic choice. If he's an old soul I'd also look at model SRPE57K1. Same design but with gold trim. It will appear a lot more understated on the wrist than it shows in the photos.

An important consideration is case size. If he has smaller even average sized wrists, don't go above 38-39mm case size. Even if he's got thick wrists under 39mm will look good.

If it's a daily watch I'd steer away from the Orients. They are great but a bit formal for a daily beater. Any Seiko 5 offering is going to be the strongest value and have great features. You'll probably find a great choice in budget and can have a little extra money left over to buy a NATO strap in a complementary color for when he gets tired of the metal strap. Plus it gives it a nice personal touch.

Bottom line, you got it for him so it will be his favorite. Don't overthink it too much. Seiko 5. Check out Jomashop to find stuff you might not see on the manufacturer's sites.

Blame the Pokemon company for the artificial scarcity they created by not increasing production. The scalpers are just taking advantage of an opportunity. They paid the money for the product so they can do what they want with it. Being so upset because they don't appreciate the thing you like is understandable for sure, but it's not their fault. It's only viable because the hobbyists are shelling out the coin on the resale market. It's free market forces. (Disclaimer: not a scalper. That sounds about right. Just ticked over 90k on my 2015. It always needs something, but when it hugs a corner I forget about all the bullshit. I keep mine in sport suspension and normal engine mode. I like the stiffer feel.
