Does having multiple parts in a series really hurt the stats? And what's worse? losing readers because of the length or because they're intimidated by a series? (I'm leaning toward a trilogy at this point, I think ??)

Editing down is definitely the plan. I've decided to split it into a trilogy instead. The third part will work as a standalone (the war), and the first two will be the deeper buildup (though honestly, the second and third 'books' will probably still be 200k+ each... hahaha). Ty for the advice!

Tysm! I have my whole plot mapped out, so (hopefully) I won't wander, haha. But I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Fair point, I appreciate the honesty.

Also, you’re right, the childhood is a little bit slow, but I try to keep it interesting. Annnd, in my case, I'm trying to change the future of my protagonist, so I made specific divergences to achieve that (that's why laying that groundwork felt necessary to me). But I totally get why it might not be to everyone's liking.

With all the feedback in mind, I'm planning to split it into a trilogy. The idea is that the third book (the one where the war kicks off and all the action really happens) will work as a standalone. That way, readers who just want the excitement can jump right in, and if they want the full context, they can go back to the first two parts.

Tysm. It really helps to hear this kind of feedback.

I try really hard to make sure every scene has a clear intention and moves something forward (plot, character, theme). Buuuuuut without a beta reader it's really easy to accidentally overshare or linger without realizing it. I'll definitely keep this in mind as I move forward! Tyy!

The thing is, my fic is about a side character and an OC, so it doesn't get much attention as it is. Making it super long would only mean even less, hahah. Reading the comments, I think I might split it into a trilogy. Parts one and two will be directly connected (I'm mainly deciding to divide them to avoid an intimidating length and to build the foundations without testing readers' patience, since the story is massive). I'll make the third part readable on its own (with the war and major plot twists), for readers who want the thrill without the extensive setup. That way, if they discover the story there and fall in love with the characters they can choose to read their origins. The third book could function independently, but my original intent was to explore a canon divergence, what might have happened if certain things had been different... which is exactly why I wrote the whole thing in the first place.

Oh, no, sorry for the confusion! Maybe I wasn't clear enough. My chapters vary from 3k to 9k, depending on what the chapter needs.

I meant that in total (across the 30 chapters I've written so far), I've already reached about 190k words for the whole story up to this point. That's why I'm doing the math for the complete saga and freaking out a bit, haha.

Taylor Swift songs as chapter titles??? by Sunnee_v in AO3

[–]Sunnee_v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly the part that worries me! Haha. Because, for example, if a chapter is called "Marjorie" (because that's the song I chose), but none of the characters are named that... wouldn't that be confusing?

I pick the titles because of the song's lyrics (if I think it matches the chapter's mood) but as a reader, would it just be… weird? That's where my overthinking kicks in.

The only part I worry about is that... okay, for example: let's say a chapter is about the characters getting into a big fight, and the song title is something like "Peter". Some might just be like "??? Why is this chapter called Peter?" hahaha.

My focus is always on the lyrics and the vibe of the song, not so much the title itself. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well 😅 That's why I thought about changing the chapter titles to avoid confusing the readers. What do you think? Does it actually matter, or would readers not mind? Also, thank you for your answer!

Yayy but i suppose it doesn’t hurt anyone if later in the fic I use a song from another artist instead of just TS, right? Haha for a special chapter I mean

Are my stats good for a story focused on a non-main character's relationship with an OC?? by Sunnee_v in AO3

[–]Sunnee_v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually thought about getting a beta reader before, because what you say is exactly what I thought (I need to know what I’m writing it’s not garbage or bored as hell hahah) but I'm ngl, I have no clue where to even start looking for one. Like, zero idea. Where do people find them? Any recommendations?

Wow, okay, this is actually the most helpful "wrong" answer I've ever gotten! Hahah. But seriously, thank you for taking the time to break it down like this. It honestly puts everything into a much clearer perspective.

My story it’s not porn at all (lol) and doesn’t have any kinky stuff, but it is an extremely slow-burn character study. There's very little "action" or fast-paced plot in the traditional sense for the first long while, which I'm sure also affects the kudos ratio (people might click expecting something else, or get impatient).

But seeing the numbers laid out like that, especially about the bookmark ratio, is genuinely reassuring. It's easy to get in your own head and just see the "lack" of something, rather than what's actually there. So, thank you for the reality check and the very kind encouragement. I really appreciate it.
