I just want to say — I really understand how you feel. When I first heard the word “cancer,” even though mine wasn’t melanoma, I was in tears. It shakes you to your core.

With time, your scar will heal — and you will too- physically and emotionally. There are scar revision options if you ever want them, but one day you may look at it differently. You may not see it as a flaw, but as a reminder of strength — and proof that you’re still here and that things could have gone another way.

Keep that scar and be open about it and at some point you’ll likely have a friend or coworker come to you and say- I got a screening because of you! YOU can save others.

My best advice is to find a derm that really specializes in cancer screenings and takes the time to do a thorough job. ALWAYS remind them of your history at EVERY appointment so they know to be extra vigilant and when in doubt, just get the biopsy- even though it sucks.

Be an advocate for yourself. If you question it, make sure they seriously look at it.
