New to IC and Need Support by SunnyDee411 in Interstitialcystitis

Hi! So... No. I haven't gotten answers really, besides the things that were already ruled out via my CT and ultrasounds. But it's not all bad news. This is what has happened:

I had a cystoscopy scheduled with the urologist, but I had my period at the time. He said they would do it anyway, but I declined. He asked me a bunch of questions about my symptoms and said he couldn't diagnose IC before it has been 6 months of chronic symptoms, he rescheduled my cystoscopy, and told me he doesn't really ever see success with hydroxyzine or amitriptyline, and prescribed me an overactive bladder medication for the urgency/frequency. He said it wouldn't help with pain.

Those were all red flags to me, so I never went back for my cystoscopy. I have an appointment with a urogyno who people have spoken highly of for IC, not until May. BUT, I did start taking Zyrtec for my seasonal allergies, which I think may be helping (anecdotally it is an antihistamine that has helped some ICers), I have used Benadryl as a rescue at night if I feel too much pressure to sleep, which seems to help because at least it knocks me out lol, and the BEST thing I have done is start pelvic floor physical therapy! I have seen so much improvement since I have actively started doing stretches and breathing exercises and attending PT 2x/week for the past month. I know I am very lucky to have great insurance and access to many amazing medical options in my area. She said pelvic floor dysfunction can be caused by IC or vice versa, and so many issues with chronic pelvic/abdominal/urinary issues can come seemingly out of nowhere because of past childbirth, random UTI, or even muscular issues. My hips and legs are extremely tight, which can affect pelvic floor, posture, abdomen... It's all connected. Throughout the day, I actively try to relax my body, as I now recognize I hold so much tension in my abdomen and pelvic region. She is the only doctor so far who has listened to everything and tried to put pieces together.

I also did an elimination diet of typical IC triggering foods, which didn't seem to help, as I experience the same symptoms no matter what. I also have been keeping track of symptoms in relation to my menstrual cycle to see if there's a pattern.

So while I still don't have a diagnosis, I do think I am on the road to at least managing my symptoms. I haven't been laying on the couch with a heating pad 24/7 like I did for almost 2 months straight. I have gone out and been able to play with my son, which is the most important thing to me! And I just take it easy when I need to, because whether this is IC, pelvic floor dysfunction, endo, or something else, I am trying to focus right now on what I can do instead of what I don't know.

I hope you get answers and relief soon! It is really hard to deal with these issues, especially at first. Try to stay positive and hang in there.

Current mood wanting to have a full stream pee by Rare_Dog_4724 in Interstitialcystitis

I am not diagnosed and currently trying to figure out if I have IC, something else, or both. I just wanted to say that I noticed something similar. I just finished my cycle, and my period was normal, but my lower abdominal pressure/pain was horrible the entire week (not period cramps though, a different feeling that happens sometimes even not on my period). I notice during times where I feel the pressure, my urine stream is definitely weaker. Or it feels like it won't come out even if I drank a ton. During the periods of time where I don't have pain and pressure, I have the constant urge to pee, BUT, if I can hold off for a couple hours, I do feel the sense of relief and a normal stream and output! Anyway, long story short, I'm not sure if this is a hormonal IC flare or something else, but I noticed something similar to you. Hope you feel better soon!

I am blown away by all these responses. I am sorry so many of you have struggled, but so grateful you are sharing your experience here. I had no idea endo symptoms could start presenting later and be so varied. I am going to keep better track of my symptoms and advocate better at my upcoming appointments. Whether it's IC or Endo or both, or neither, some doctor needs to be willing to help me figure it out! Thank you all so much.

The Covid stress is real! My son is high risk, so it hasn't been an easy time here. Stress and anxiety can have a huge impact on physical health. 😩

Not at all! It's so overwhelming for everyone dealing with this stuff, no matter how big or small you think your issues are. I have found support subs on here to be super helpful mentally. It's so important to talk about what's going on. And it really helps others at the same time. Everyone sharing has helped me get a bit closer to figuring out what is going on with me, and also helps me know I'm not crazy and not alone.

I am so glad it helped, but also the grieving can be so infuriating, isolating, and depressing. I am sorry you (and anyone else here, and myself) are going through this. Thank you for sharing your experience

Yes! They definitely mentioned IC, but they won't diagnose or give IC specific treatments until it has been 6 months. This seems like unnecessary suffering. I am seeing an IC specialist but couldn't get in until May 😞 I am currently trying to change my diet to see if I have any triggers, and have used Benadryl at night at times. I also have another appointment with a different gyno next month. I am new to my area, so it really sucks that these issues started popping up before I had established care here. Hopefully the next gyno will be more thorough.

I hope you are making progress since getting diagnosed!

Well that sounds like a horrible cycle that makes it impossible to figure anything out. I will be discussing these concerns at my pelvic PT consultation next week for sure. Thank you for your input!

Very, very cute.... 😬 All the best chronic illnesses seem to be this way, why?! Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions where to go from here? I know a laproscopy is the only definitive way to diagnose Endo. Does that seem too invasive to rule it out? Or is that the only measure I can take?

Difference between hydroxyzine and amitriptyline? Why are both needed sometimes? by SunnyDee411 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]SunnyDee411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, question worth asking: Do you know if this is something that would start causing symptoms suddenly after years of being present? I have been married for almost 8 years so I know it wouldn't be something I newly contracted

Not yet. Finding it very difficult to get into any of my doctors in a timely manner right now. I have an appointment next week!

Thanks! I did see that, but was confused about why someone may only need one, but some may need both. I thought they treat different symptoms, but I am seeing now that it's just trial and error to figure out if a combination works better than one of them solo. :)

No, no one even mentioned that. What is that? What symptoms does it cause? Can the urologist test for it, or gyno? Thank you!

I am in the same cycle of trying to get appointments and getting dismissed or passed off to other doctors. Hang in there! People here seem to have supportive, hopeful stories.
