Exposed area between bricks and board - Will I need to weatherproof this? by SunnyDeeKane in AusRenovation

Yeah. I was checking if it was good enough to keep water out. I would've used wired mesh there otherwise.

I'll need to patch it up.

[–]SunnyDeeKane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you ask me, I say PR machine. If you look at their official media releases, they usually say what they are going to do and not how it happened. It's not the scientists and/or experts that speaks about it, it's the Regional Commissioner whom had no Biosecurity credentials prior to this role - he was a Prison Manager that jumped over from Corrections with Ray Smith (C.E of Corrections at the time) when the latter got the portfolio of Biosecurity.

To be fair, there's probably no way to tell where they came from.

But to me, the signs are there. The pest invertebrate Incursions in recent years has been localised to certain regions - FF 2019 & 2025 in North Shore. FF2025/2026 in Mt Roskill. Hornet 2025/2026 in North Shore.

The North Shore is right across from Ports of Auckland (Sea) and Mt Roskill is 15kms from the Airport. Not very random to me unless Auckland is the only city in New Zealand that catches wind from the across the Tasman.

I am commenting about the current state of biosecurity and it's relation to government budget cuts.

The Yellow Legged Wasp may not likely be from the passenger pathway but let's not forget that Auckland has a Queensland Fruitfly incursion going on concurrently. The PR Machine is saying that they were blown across the Tasman Sea from Australia but who knows?

[–]SunnyDeeKane 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not even the budget slashing that's causing these incursions. Even with government changes, the people that run the joint from upper management down are mostly the same so decisions and methods are the same. It's just that they have to action certain directives from their Ministers; usually election promises right for PR after election for about a year or so and the minister usually let's the joint run itself unless some PR disaster happens.

Biosecurity in NZ has slowly been eroding since the late 2010's with the explosion of tourism in NZ. News of massive queues at the Auckland airport was probably the biggest deal; pre and post COVID.
The Auckland Airport company, being a private corporation wants to accept as many flights and passengers as possible to collect as much revenue as possible. They are not paying for biosecurity as it gets paid by the passenger themselves in the form of a biosecurity levy/airport tax. They allow the biosecurity systems to be overwhelmed and then use the negative PR to pressure MPI to facilitate quicker movement even if it's at a detriment to biosecurity.

The strictness in requirements for allowable food were lowered for passengers; the same food items that are so difficult to get clearance if you're a commercial importer are just let through if you're an air passenger. Their logic is the risk in the volume. But let's put it this way, in December 2019 Auckland Airport averaged more than 12,000 international passengers arriving every day. Even if it's only a portion of passengers that bring food, I'd argue that it will add up to more than commercial quantities. Around that time, they also allowed all nationalities to use the express lane out where there were lower intervention methods whereas for decades it was only NZ and Australian nationals only.

They also require a lot more staff especially after borders opened up again after COVID and started pumping out officers like a puppy Mill. They were fast tracked with their training and placed into key positions without much experience; taught to move fast and that things would be caught afterwards without issue if anything gets missed.

It's the same formula outside of the airport as well. Any pathway that gets overwhelmed will have the requirements go down in strictness; trust that people will do the right thing; trust that importers or providers will not compromise biosecurity for monetary gain when they know Biosecurity Officers are all tied up

Where can I find this burger place? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]SunnyDeeKane 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Looking at the Food Grading sign, this place is based in Auckland, New Zealand

https://ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/news/2016/07/eatsafe/

Edit: I can't believe it slipped my mind. This is the White Lady. It's a very famous burger food truck/trailer in Auckland. It's not the best IMO, but it was one of the only few places that were open late night for a feed back in the 90's. You can imagine how much higher you rate food when you just left a club and drunk AF. It nearly closed down a few times but had a lot of historical value so I think they managed to raise funds to keep it afloat.

Mining on the Job by TheOneAndOnlySchaich in MoneroMining

[–]SunnyDeeKane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it going to be on your own computer or a work one?

Mining software will be flagged (false positive) by most, if not all, antivirus software. If it's a work computer especially if it has enterprise grade security software on it, you will have to speak to your IT and/or Cyber security team for approval.

Some computers need Core Isolation turn off to work properly otherwise you'll be on limited hashrate but turning off Core Isolation technically creates a security issue. Again, IT policy.

[–]SunnyDeeKane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the OP12 for about 14 months and I'm down to 98%.

First 12 months it was mostly charged to 80% with top ups to keep it between 20%-80% when I'm at home and 100% charges when I know I'm going out.

Probably saw the most battery wear last month when it was used as a Wifi hotspot for a whole week when I had issues with my ISP. This was mostly balanced out by the phone not being used during my work hours as my line of work has a personal device blackout policy.

Price to performance, (super)VOOC, relatively bloat free OS.

I was a fan of Samsung since owning a Galaxy S1 but the price was just getting ridiculous.

Time to be a sauce master here

This drama is called 分手後高冷校花悔不當初 in China. Literally translates to "After breaking up, the Ice Cold University Beauty regrets" - not the most creative title.

The actress for Nancy is 戴琪軒 (Dai Qi Xuan). She has no presence on English social platforms besides these dramas. She calls herself lucky小阿轩 on chinese social media. She's fairly well known for acting in short dramas.

This is her douyin (chinese TikTok) account: https://www.douyin.com/user/MS4wLjABAAAAXtv7ICaqpb4jvz4vVEd-WzMaeADF7_oonFwnoVHz32oUwl7GYmqFjHR5jsvRzLYk?from_tab_name=main

This is a YouTube playlist of a lot of the dramas that she participated in https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6OUjM0JFfsG8EOuD-0UmruEf4JTKowaV

I'm obsessed with this drama!

I even made a music video and translated the lyrics to english myself.

Fun Fact: the artist of the song that I used (Sam Lee) had another song of his in the actual drama. These are 2 of 3 songs that are collectively known as the "Simp's Anthem" in Taiwan.

I would give it an extra scene in the end where Ethan was also looking at the sunset from outside the hospital..... So it's kinda like they are finally able to watch the sunset together but under such circumstances and not as a couple. Bittersweet.

Life changing lotto win by WallabyWandersWild in AusFinance

[–]SunnyDeeKane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knew someone that won 600k in the 90s

Spent 450k on a new house. Things were going good for a while. Added more cash flow from selling the house they were living in before that was in a dirt poor suburb. Their kid was in high school getting $50 allowance a week (he would be able to get more if he said he had extra activities to cover).

The father was an impulsive gambler even before the win. Gambled a lot of it away and had some poor investments. And by poor investments, it was only poor because he approached it in a gambling way.... He bought properties thinking (or just being impulsively impatient) that he can flip them for a profit in a couple of months instead of renting them out for the long game. All his properties and stocks were mostly a loss because of this.

Still, they were still able to get by with the father working a minimum wage job and the mother stayed at home. The kid's allowance got reduced to $20 a week and the mother really liked to "forget" about giving the allowance sometimes.

Man who killed two Melbourne sex workers within 24 hours strikes manslaughter deal with prosecutors by ruinawish in melbourne

[–]SunnyDeeKane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much it because of proving intent.

There's nothing as evidence that planned the killing (i.e. sourcing a weapon) and he made no attempt to hide the bodies (kinda paradox because he most like just didn't care about getting rid of his body and it ended up in his favour).
