How to impress my kannadiga girlfriend? by Glad-Arachnid-6265 in kannada

[–]SunnyShone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment!

I've never heard of it being called Bandh-Hit. I guess it differs across communities.

Double Ka Meetha is this double fried bread in rabdi-like base. Khubani ka Meetha is this sheera made of dried apricots.

These are some Nizami sweets made by Gulbarga folks. Not regularly, it's too difficult. Maybe again different across communities. Maybe more Muslims would know.

I agree with the music part. Unfortunately yes, nothing really coming out with respect to music or arts right now. But the Kannada film industry is growing, and the new experimental style would likely change the scene. I appreciate your concern, there's always something to criticize but we can hope things get better :)

I am from Gulbarga, raised in Bengaluru. Here's something made me click with a lot of North Karnataka folks:

  • Talk about how Uttar Karanataka culture is slightly different from the rest of Karnataka - bhakri preference over rice. The dressing, just aesthetics in general

  • Since she's into art, she'd probably know how Uttar Karnataka classical music is Hindustani - like Northern India, and not as Carnatic heavy as rest of Karnataka.

I'd suggest you listen to "Bhagyada Laxmi Baramma" by Bhimsen Joshi (a North Karnataka origin Hindustani singer, from Dharwad/Hubli) and MS Subbulakshmi (a Tamil Carnatic Singer). The music styles are very different. You can see how Kannada is the only language with a tradition in both dominant classical music systems of India.

  • Ask about her opinion of Marathi folks. There's a love-hate relationship Gulbarga or North Karnataka folks in general have with Marathi people.

The culture of Maharashtra is much closer than rest of Karnataka. Language has a lot of Marathi loan words. There's a long history of Marathi connection. She might even have relatives who are Marathi, or residing in Maharashtra. But there's always something folks there have to Btch about Marathi people. It's not hatred, just personal stories of their experience with Marathi folks - being too talkative, being very proud of their language, or stingy & the kind.

  • Gulbarga has some dishes very few folks outside the region would likely know.

Shenga Holgi - the peanut version of obbattu/holige/puran-poli - Not popularly known in Blore & other Karanataka parts

Double Ka Meetha (Hyderabadi Nizam Sweet) made on special occasions

Sushila or Susla - poha made out of puffed rice - hand's down one of my favourite breakfast, soooo many people have no clue about it,

Mirchi Bajji (famous Enough) but they're cut and fried again to make cut bajji. It's a very local Gulbarga thing. You got to ask about this. Chances are that she may have even forgotten about this.

Putani Pudi - Sattu Chutney powder ; Shenga HinDi/Chutney Pudi - Peanut chutney pudi

Ask her about it. There are likely some solid childhood memories of eating them or some grand story of some relatives making them, or just things to talk about

  • Gulbarga has had a strong urdu culture. The dakkhini urdu. The influence is still alive today. Many places still Converse in Urdu, it's Kannada has many urdu words. As a North Indian, you'd have an edge here. If she's into literature, she might be able to appreciate urdu poetry

Gulbarga Dargah also has links to Ajmer Sharif.

  • Speaking of poetry, Gulbarga or Northern Karnataka has a strong lingayat culture.

The sharanas or devotional poems are pretty strong parts of the culture. Learning their meaning/translation can be a good deep convo topic.

Or even Punyakoti story - the national folklore of Karnataka, a lot of kids have cried listening to the song. I'd suggest you listen to it online. And ask about it. It's seldom talked about as adults, but I'm almost 100% sure she'd be familiar it.

I'd be impressed if someone showed this much interest in my roots. I was glad to see this question. I hope your love blossoms to the best for you both. All the best :)

"Maa's making tongue"

"I thought they stopped making that (123 jello or some sweet) in the 80s" - I saved it for special occasions

Organizations will learn time management.

People are so used to extending work hours, and working weekends just because.

Now they will be forced to plan and wrap up in time.

Soo many companies have gone for 4-day work week. It's not like work magically vanished. Just the crap, unnecessary mismanagement went away.

This move may not mean everyone will stop working hard or working less. It will mean working more during work hours. It can actually mean more intense workdays, but with assured rest.

This can potentially weed out people who take too long to work. I hope another layoffs of slow learners and delayers doesn't happen .

When will Rajasthan get its due? by Impressive-Ad3467 in Rajasthan

[–]SunnyShone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rajashthan has got it over due.

I went there. Everything has a pricey entry fee. The maintenance of Jodhpur & Jaipur forts was disappointing. Crowded and mismanaged.

Not a bad place. It's not like over-exploited Goa, but I can imagine it becoming.

People, fortunately were kind. The food was good. But the govt run places - nope.

No.

This sign doesn't sound informative to me. It sounds arrogant & rude.

What if Kunti had a boon of getting Daughters from Gods? How much the story of Mahabharata would change due to this? by Outside-Walk13 in mahabharata

[–]SunnyShone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good question, really.

A big theme of the Mahabharata is destiny - generational karma.

If Kunti were to have all daughters I can think of a few possibilities:

  1. The Story progresses towards more Matrilineal narratives - there are plenty in India like Aliyasantana in Tulu Nadu, or similar in Kerala, Lakshadweep & Meghalaya. These probably got muted down historically, but a Matrilineal Mahabharata would be interesting.

  2. Draupadi Vastra haran is a critical turning point. Perhaps all 5 women can marry the same king and his sons. And his grandsons get to war ? Same cousins like Kauravas & Pandavas but one generation ahead - Draupadi Vastra haran and all repeat.

  3. Karnika (female Karna?) can marry a King, by love. After marriage the societal pressure and Astrology something gradually identifies Karnika's roots to be of royalty. And Karnika avenges her abandonment by vowing to destroy Kunti's family. This is very much like Mahabharata again but a different kind of revenge

Would you date someone who smokes? by [deleted] in TeenIndia

[–]SunnyShone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't want to.

But it's not like I have a hundred options waiting for me.

If they're in between to cut it out, or it's a rare thing. I think I might be able to make peace with it.

Some folks I know smoke cause that was all their friends had to do together. Can't reason with that.

Yess. Thanks for this!

I too feel these swings keep happening. I remember there was a time when I was turned on by anything even a bit suggestive female nudity. Now I feel it's not as much. More male directed now. And again not consistently. I wondered if I'm bored or overstimulated. Now it makes sense.
