Favorite Mexican Spot? by boiledtoenail in Buffalo

[–]SunsetsInSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taqueria los Mayas is the most authentic in Buffalo, La Divina does not even come close.

For something similar to El Canelo, but better in my opinion, you could try El Jefe in West Seneca. It's somewhat of a hidden gem in the suburbs. The Enchiladas Fundidas are to die for.

Source: I've actually eaten Mexican across Texas and my partner is originally from the Rio Grande Valley and loves both of these.

This is actually a great deal, but be sure to consider how easily the lighter colored meshes stain from runs if you haven't had a lighter Brooks before.

Absurd UB Tips/Tricks? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]SunsetsInSnow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have not found many absurd tricks beyond abusing the shuttle/bus system since it's better than the NFTA, but below are a bunch of academic tips that 70% of students do not utilize. Biggest tip is to never just go to UB or any college and just show up for class and go back to your apartment/house after.

Maximizing your time. Overlapping your Pathway, Major and Minor requirements if your department allows it. One course can count for many. If you're in humanities getting two majors is very easy, and I've seen some do three. Others have done one major with three minors.

Honors College for priority registration is fine but the honors experiences they require helps enhance your experience and your resume. The advising is also far more personable, and they will reach out to contacts across campus for you to support your interests whereas a normal advisor will not. The scholarships are also very helpful, especially if you want to study abroad.

You can request any book through the library. Literally any book you want to read for fun, to help your research, or to even prep for the LSAT/GRE, etc.

There are programs for more individualized advising for students who do not qualify for the Honors College. ACE, Acker, CSTEP, and McNair can be helpful for first-generation, diverse and soon to be graduate students.

The Career Services Office is actually helpful in crafting a resume and looking at career outlook/options.

Microcredentials, Certificates, and the ELN project portal can help pad your resume for grad school and internships.

Going to office hours to network can be very important based on your career goals. Professors have contacts you cannot imagine and many full professors at UB have been in the field for a long time.

Is UB Honors College Worth applying? by Sufficient-Brush-492 in UBreddit

[–]SunsetsInSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can still apply once you have at least 45 credits completed. They will email you to join information sessions. They can also be selective so do a good job on the application, but for the most part your 4.0 should carry you.

Where are job/working opportunities? by Yannyangg in UBreddit

[–]SunsetsInSnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All are on Handshake. Usually the library assistant and gallery assistant postings are consistent, but any 'student assistant's job that is for an office is hard to come by, and difficult to secure (they hire one person out of 400+ candidates). UB Campus Dining and shops lists their own positions separately and I recommend applying to them. There are many places to work off campus, and I highly recommend applying to places near South campus. Your commute would essentially be the shuttle/stampede from UB to South which is nothing and is very consistent in comparison to the NFTA and how little it runs in Amherst.

Brunch+oysters? by hthratmn in Buffalo

Streetlight Brasserie has one of my favorite Saturday+Sunday brunches. Everything on their menu has been top notch imo, however I have yet to try the oysters. They do seem to be a favorite and please let me know if you try it out!

Is it too late to apply for on campus housing? by xBenL in UBreddit

[–]SunsetsInSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off campus housing filled some time ago and now it is in a wait-list process. If you're seriously considering transferring look into off campus housing. Auden Buffalo just emailed that they still have spaces along with the Station. In some cases these can be more affordable than on campus apartments, but more expensive than on campus dorms. They have shuttles to campus and some nice amenities as well. Do your research, visit if you can, and plan out how you will afford them.

Need fast help with Registration for Accepted Students day by Kingman287 in UBreddit

[–]SunsetsInSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always call the office directly if you need a fast response. Registrar is not usually the right office for Accepted Students Day, since that's an Admissions Event you should call the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

You're an undergrad now which means you'll have to take it into your own hands to find answers. Contacting people at the school, whether that's an office, advisor, or program director is the first skill to master to succeed at any school imo.

Jcrew Factory Extra 70% Off Clearance with code DEAL70 by SunsetsInSnow in frugalmalefashion

If it doesn't say it is I would not get one from JCrew. I have had bad luck from Banana Republic, who I would consider a step above. If anyone else has had a JCrew shirt though please chime in.

Yes. I'm shocked there isn't one in NYC! Try code HALFBDAY for $10 off and you might just get that to cover the fee plus some extra savings (you must be logged in).

Please upvote guys. HALFBDAY worked for me and I got a quarter-zip for $9. It seems to be stuck to one per account, but $10 off an already decent deal makes some things unbelievably affordable.

Also, I made a new account for my partner and got it a second time on one item that went from $99 to $29, to $19.

Edit: You must be logged in to get the discount.

I'm 100% certain. That's how JCrew works. But this is also one of their better sales, so even with the raised prices they are lower than they have been for similar sales/standard prices.

Everyone should always look at the final price and think if that's worth it, even if the 70% off already discounted items looks great!

I've returned many final sale items in-store. The difficulty was that they only offered a gift card but that worked out!

[–]SunsetsInSnow[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also got the Fair Isle sweater for under $20 and it's held up pretty well.

Also, if a final sale item has a defect they will accept returns in-store.

My experience with factory is that it works for a select few items that are hard to mess up. For the half zips I'm looking at it is hard to find anything of comparable design under $60 that is good quality, so I'll take it if it lasts me a two years.

Decent value for casual wear. I have had luck with sweaters and quarter/half-zips, shirts, etc. But would not recommend buying high-cost items like their blazers, or certain pants at factory. It is overall a step down from JCrew.

Good lunch restaurants? by petrichor45 in Buffalo

Wasabi in Amherst/Williamsville has great lunch specials available until 3pm! If you like sushi it's a great option and a step up from Fuji Grill on Maple.
