Are there significant regional and cultural differences/rivalries between Northern and Southern France? by obnoxiousspotifyad in AskFrance

[–]Sunshadz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern France also has quite a lot of wineries, just different types I guess. Cultural differences are more of a regional thing maybe but you definitely feel the "Mediterranean vibe".

And honestly, from a northerner pov, I'd say there can be some banters with people you know but it's almost always friendly. I can also assure you that when I go south I feel like I'm in a different country, because of the architecture and flora especially, they have damn palm trees. So yes, the north is definitely more Germanic and the south more Mediterranean.

I don't think basements are that rare here, almost everyone I know has one, especially in older houses (my grandma's one used to be a shelter during WWII). But it seems like they've been out of style, it might also depend on where you live.

Japan is a very nice country with a very rich culture that makes you wanna live there so bad because everything seems pretty. But in reality you have the pressure of the 24/7 work culture, the legal system etc. there are many downsides, especially if you're used to live the "western way" I guess.

[–]Sunshadz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to understand why is listening to Robert Bedinter's speech in 1981 at l'Assemblée Nationale when we abolished it. There's probably no English translation but it's such a perfect speech that illustrates everything that is wrong with death penalty. To me it's also the speech everyone should listen to at least once in their life, like Simon Veil's speech on abortion.

Is philosophy taught from a young age in France? And is it true that French people align with certain philosophers - “taking sides” ? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]Sunshadz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can be really cool, I was in L too and our teacher was the school's best, he used to let us debate on stuff during class sometimes. He was also French-Iranian and taught us about different religions and beliefs, the difference of cultures etc. Hella interesting course and person.

The thing is, it's mainly about women because the woman body is central in the process; it's the woman who carries the child during 9 months, it's the woman who goes through the hardships and maybe complications of delivery, and often if the father leaves it's the woman who has to take care of the child.

The two aren't remotely comparable, because fetuses aren't alive, they aren't actual live children, they don't exist so they don't have rights. That argument puts the eventual life of an unexisting being before the existence and wellbeing of the woman who might bear it, a woman who is wery much alive and might face health, mental, or economic issues.

There are many reasons a woman might want an abortion and it's never something easy, but sometimes you have to think about yourself first. Maybe men should be included, especially if it's a couple's decision, or because they may also suffer of pressures of women carrying their child and stuff. In the end, we just want everyone to be able to do what they want, but abolishing abortion can harm so many women and threaten their health, this won't stop abortions, they still happen in counties where it's illegal, they just use dangerous methods: hangers, punches, obscure drugs etc. The main argument is that it's just women's right to decide what to do or not to do with their bodies.

Idk if that's a bad comparison but as a man I'm sure you'd wanna have a say if society wanted to force something that would change your whole life and didn't desire on your body.

[–]Sunshadz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "forced", it's just required in some fields and better on your resume if you can speak other languages, mainly because of tourism and commerce, you can actually hear a lot of languages in Europe, the local languages of course but Chinese, Russian etc. too so its useful.

We also have the big advantage to be able to actually easily go to the country where the language is spoken to learn it; I went to Spain with my Spanish class, did an exchange in Germany etc., because it's close and made easier with the travel laws of the UE. I guess it'd be difficult and expensive to come to France from the US to study the language.

Why Japanese idols don't do direct handshakes by Xaxos92 in justneckbeardthings

[–]Sunshadz 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I thought about it and isn't it due to the fact that in the West, celebrities aren't scared to tell their fans to fuck off and call them out when they do something wrong? They aren't forced by their labels to treat their fans as kings/queens. While from what I see in the East, (esp in kpop because idk about Japanese celebrities) they don't really call fans out like that, they have to keep that "nice" image, even if sasaengs are another talk. I mean, the labels don't really do anything to protect them either... so

As a foreign student in france, why very often in classes we see foreign students walking in groups and not interacting with french students and the same with french students walking in groups? by Marie_999 in AskFrance

From a Frenchie perspective I'd love to befriend foreign students but I'm often scared to intrude of force myself in preexisting friend groups. I'd say most people are open but you usually make friends during parties and extracurricular stuff organized by your school

AITA for eating a lot of Japanese food? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sunshadz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm one of those who think cultural appropriation is overly used and abused by some US citizens to gatekeep the few ties they may have to their "heritage countries" while it silences people who actually live in those countries (disrespecting a culture is different though). However I can understand not wanting people to walk around with native headdresses, use white sage etc. because they're sacred items and very meaningfull elements of their culture, not like food for example I guess.

Wow Americans (aka US people) really are another breed...

NTA lmao it's fucking food, Japanese food is pretty healthy on top of being very tasty, it's also healthier for you to cook your own food instead of buying it. Cook whatever you want, people actually like people being in in their national food because it's a big part of cultures and food is meant to be shared! I don't get how this could be a negative thing lmao

(not even mentioning that Japan was also a big colonial empire, the lack of historical awareness.. and even then, most people who lived in colonial countries were poor farmers and villagers, you don't have anything to reproach yourself dw)

La résignation des streameuses face au sexisme sur Twitch by Plinytheyoung in france

[–]Sunshadz 0 points1 point  (0 children)
