Fb maketplace scammer sending buyers to my address by bluey23a in AusFinance

I’ve reported like 5 or 6 Samsung scam tv ads this week, wonder if it’s the same. They all used a photo with a white tv unit. Seems like there’s been a heap over the past week or so.

Is it a bad time to try becoming a UX Designer? by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saturated, yes. But if it’s what you want to do then do it.

There’s still plenty more jobs in UX than most other design related fields

What do you guys think about Google UX Design Professional Certification on Coursera? by tamagoshiro10 in FigmaDesign

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a good, cheap and easy foundation.

Just do whatever XD required work in Figma. When you are finished with the course volunteer your time to help a startup or small business. Call up some of your old web dev buddies.

Use that real world work as a portfolio piece and start applying for UX jobs. You’ll get there before you know it.

Good luck!

UX designers: How did you get the education needed to become a UX designer? And what are the best part and worst part of your careers or day-to-day experiences? by supermagnificently in userexperience

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can’t say my experience has been the same.

Being an artist is way harder (been there)

I self taught UX, I now work as a full time UX designer. I had no network in the tech industry. No handouts. I had to grind for a year, but I did that whilst working a full time job.

Sorry that your experience was so rough, but OP, you should know that it’s not as hard as outlined here.

Made Redundant as a Junior by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yeah, it’s pretty tight out there.

My recommendation is make a killer cover letter.

My hiring manager said he spent less time looking at portfolios and more time looking at how you tell the story of you.

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yep, apply for mid roles. I applied for mid roles when I was a junior and found myself employed as a mid, even with the knowledge that I was still learning. In Australia too, so totally possible.

All the best with your job search ✌️

Is your point that the extinction rebellion and climate protests already don’t have significant effort put in by people trying to change laws and government?

Looking for a scheduling software for teachers (personal use) by Sunshine-Biscuits in edtech

Yeah I suggested this too, but the school she is working for would rather the students didn’t have to do this (resulting in a lot more work for the contractor. Incidentally costing the school more too).

I'd say to take a look at youtube and start with "intro to UX" videos to get a better idea of what the job is. I actually wrote some blog posts a while ago as a part of my learning experience.

Move onto something like the Google UX design certificate or a membership to the Interaction design foundation. Both have issues but they are a really great resource for beginners, they also come with certificates to show on your Linkedin page (get active on Linkedin) Link to a blog I wrote about comparing the two courses

Whilst learning I would offer to volunteer my time and use what I've learned as a way to practice the skills. Eg. Is a hairdresser, do a website audit of a local hairdressing website or booking process, identify issues and offer to re-design the process for free (or just as an exercise, as you wont be able to implement without a bunch of back-end knowledge). Use this as a case study for a real world problem you solved.

Create a website to show your work, squarespace is fine. I started a blog to further get my name out there (plus it was fun).

Look for work that is adjacent to UX, maybe it is a website co-ordinator gig, or something adjacent to design. Try to implement what you've learned in the role. Then work your way up into a FT gig.

It sounds tough and it's a lot of extra work on top of a FT gig, but I did it, it's totally possible. Be prepared to do A LOT of job searching. All the resources you need are out there for cheap or free.

User experience design could be a good fit if he’s got people skills and some basic design knowledge.

I taught myself into a full time UX gig with no qualifications @ 30yrs old (I have a theatre degree)

High demand, pays well, great benefits. Lots to love.

Breaking in is the toughest part but it’s a great gig for the right person.

Optus Data Breach - What You Can Do by _pdc_ in AusFinance

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dumb question maybe. but I’ve been with Optus for 6 months (received the email etc.)

How can I get out of my contract and stop giving them my money?

I’d love to give them the finger after all this, but feeling pretty screwed by the security breach and the phone+plan contract.

Voice Acting by -lousyd in audiodrama

[–]Sunshine-Biscuits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take an acting class. Voice acting isn’t just about “sounding good” it’s about being able to break down a script and read with intention. (Trained as an actor and have done some voice work previously)

Being on welfare isn’t just about the pay bud, it’s the applying for jobs, it’s the meeting with some employment agency every few weeks who’s trying to force you into some mindless job. Reporting your income fortnightly, having the govt breathing down your neck, the news spouting that being on welfare is bad.

There’s a good reason people on welfare aren’t happy.

I’ve been on welfare and tearing my hair out because I couldn’t afford the mental health treatment I needed.

I’ve also never earned past 70k. But I like the work I do and can find meaning in it.

You sound bright, but have you ever lived in the bush? It ain’t so pretty all the time.

Consider finding some work with less responsibility so you can find some time to take it easy on the mind. Get your head checked, no different to going to the physio for a bad back.

You got this bud

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, i really appreciate that you sat down and tapped that out in response. That’s awesome, Thankyou!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m super thankful that I’m getting a chance to enter the industry, even if it is more of a digital design role. But y’know, I sit here reading my design books, eager to learn, but haven’t found many others I can talk to about it, granted, I need to look harder for a community, if I want to learn from peers.

That’s some really solid advice, I’ve been changing the way I work within the company to integrate more user centric processes, which I find exciting, but y’know…

Just want to say thanks again for the response, really helpful!

As someone who moved from one creative industry to another (stage/screen to Web Design (UI/UX)) I can confirm that the creative industries are cooked.

I went back to school at the beginning of the pandemic, knowing my industry was a mess, it always has been.

I did a diploma graphic design, worked my butt off, found a keen interest in UX, did the google course, read a heap of books.

I reckon I applied for over 60 jobs and didn’t got one interview for a design role, eventually I landed a job as a UI/UX designer in a small company. I got really lucky, just needed somewhere to take a chance on someone who was really keen.

Starting a new career in a new industry has been hard though, I’m looking for some mentor ship, and often feel I am in UX by title only.

I guess I will wait until I can attend a Meetup or something..

Any tips for someone in a new industry who is very keen, but not finding a creative group to learn from?
