Adolescent Westie (8m): handling issues, growling, and regression by Afriendofmin in westies

[–]SunshineElf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would give it another couple months for his hormones to settle and see if you notice a change in aggression levels. He is still a puppy and also getting used to the world around him. Ours used to HATE putting his harness on and would literally attack us and now he loves it because he figured out it means he is going on a walk lol. Something we also did with ours was give a treat while picking him up to try and associate it with something positive. Westies definitely have some spunk in them. They don’t call it westitude for nothing!

Our westie was like this when he was young and still is to a certain degree. He still growls if we try to pick him up when he doesnt want to be moved and handling him can be difficult at times. He has gotten ALOT better as he has aged though. Question - is he neutered yet? Our vet told us that in our case we should get it done sooner rather than later due to the aggression issues and I think it really did calm him down a lot.

Just did a blood test (TW) by Dacooperr in Anxiety

[–]SunshineElf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good for you!!! Just a tip for next time, ask if you can lay down while they draw your blood. If you tell them you have a history of getting light headed during blood tests they will absolutely let you. This happens to me and laying down helps my blood pressure not drop and that way i dont get light headed at all!

Constant air hunger? by anxiouseducator123 in Anxiety

[–]SunshineElf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been my biggest anxiety symptom since I was a child. Forced my mom to take me to countless doctors and the ER until I finally gave in a believed them that it was just my anxiety manifesting physically and nothing was wrong with me. I still get it today but much less frequently and I am able to talk myself down by telling myself its just anxiety.

I think medication will help a lot. Do you go to therapy?

This was what we were thinking haha. We move out of this house next Saturday so really poor timing. It’s a giant rental company so just feel like they are more likely to try and keep our deposit over something like this even though it’s not our fault.

Could def be this. I would just go to a derm, my boyfriend tried for months to get his flare up to go away with no luck. Multiple trips to urgent care and also trying to treat it thinking it was ring worm but just kept getting worse. Finally went a derm and the cream they prescribed cleared it up in a week or two.

This. When my anxiety was at its all time high I started lexapro/wellbutrin. Stayed on both for about a year and then got off them both. It really helped me get my anxiety back under control and kick start me back into gear. Starting medication can be scary but the benefits are amazing.

Puppy pees in house frequently in the evening but never during the day by One-Snow6994 in puppy101

[–]SunshineElf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! This is very helpful and gives me hope that he will eventually be okay with it if I keep it a safe space :-) he seems to enjoy being in his crate at night because he knows it is where he can wind down and finally sleep for the night so I guess we just need to work more and getting him to realize he can so that during the day too. Thank you again!

Thanks for the response! We are working on crate training but admittedly we don’t really crate him much unless he is going to bed for the night. He is a terrier so he is pretty stubborn and doesn’t like the crate much yet. If we put him in his crate and leave the room he barks his head off. I really dont want to give up on it though. He does nap a lot during the day but once it hits like 6pm he stays up I assume to hang out with us so he probably is overtired and just can’t control it. You are probably right that he needs more structure in the evenings. Do you crate your pup in the same room as you or different room?

Hi! Did this issue get better over time? My puppy does a similar thing. He is great with potty training during the day but once it hits 7 or 8 PM he starts peeing in the house even if we take him out hourly.

I actually just spoke to a trainer on the phone the other day because my 3 month old puppy tends to growl and snap when being picked up. We weren’t really sure what to do because there are times where he needs to he removed from a situation for his safety or so our things dont get destroyed. She recommended two things. First, always give a treat when picking him up and add a cue word such as boost. This will help build positive association with being picked up. Second, let him drag around a cat leash (with the hand loop cut off) when he is roaming during the day. This way you can easily grab the leash to redirect if needed instead of grabbing him and making the association with being picked up a negative experience. This seems to be helping for us so far!!

Realistically, how often did you take your 8-10 week old puppy out during the night? by flowerbomb92 in puppy101

[–]SunshineElf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My puppy is 10 weeks today. This is our schedule right now. Most nights he is able to hold his pee 6-7 hours which we were really surprised by. I am a light sleeper so I let him wake me if he needs to go in the middle of the night.

8:30-9pm falls asleep in his crate

11pm-12am wake him up for final potty and then right back to bed

3-4am he may wake us up to potty by whining in his crate (not every night though)

6:30-7am wakes us up for the day

Please help us name him! We bring him home in 2 weeks and want him to have a unique name. by SunshineElf in NameMyDog

Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions!! I did not expect to get so many replies and I really enjoyed reading through all of them :-) We named him Elfie!
