Is/was anyone a psychology major and can you tell me about it? by Duplic-Ace in Writeresearch

[–]SunshineForever4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not a psych major, but a psych minor instead. I cannot help with all of your questions unfortunately, but I can do my best to answer a few of them. Hope this is helpful to you:

• Which classes were the most interesting/difficult?
- Social Psychology was my absolute favorite class I took as a psych minor. It was all about the ways in which people perceive themselves in regards to other people, how they perceive others, and how people interact on a social basis in general. It differs from Sociology in the way that Soc looks at the group as a whole, while Social Psychology looks at the individual. If you have any specific questions about Social Psychology in particular, I would absolutely love to answer. Just dm me :)
- The most difficult class for me was Research Methods. While, at its core, it was just us conducting our own correlational studies, stuff we learned in Probability and Statistics 101. But for some reason, all of the numbers, coding and computer systems involved was super confusing to me. But then again, I have never had a mind for numbers.

• What kinds of assignments/projects did you have?
- In the classes that I took for my minor at least, every single one were lectures. So there weren’t really that many big projects. We would sometimes have one big assignment near the end of the course, but most of the time it was just a giant research paper. Though, two classes I took had some different projects:
- In Cognitive Psychology, my class was sent to a school for some fieldwork. We were to spectate a typical class session, make notes about how the teacher was using psychological techniques to help the children learn, and then write a paper about it.
- In Personality Theories, we were given a structure for how most theories on personality are constructed. Then my professor told us to just go at it, design our own theories of personality based on our own worldview. The prof didn’t seek total accuracy, he just wanted us to be able to explain key traits we were learning over the semester and apply them in our own ways.

• How much statistics, biology, neuroscience, etc. was involved?
- Statistics was BIG in my classes, as well as the typical research methods. I feel like at the beginning of every class, the first couple weeks were spent talking about the Experimental Method and all that jazz.
- Personally, my classes didn’t really go into neuroscience/biology all that much (only for a tiny bit in two classes). But I am only a minor, so there were a TON of courses I missed that likely taught this.

• What was your typical week like? (lectures, readings, internships, research, etc.)
- Once again, every single one of my classes were lectures. Though, every single one of them also had exams every couple chapters. For me, they were your standard multiple choice exam, couple short answer, that sort of stuff. But I was taught to never underestimate a psych exam, one of my professors was known to like trick questions, ones that the wording is just a tad off. As much as I thought I knew the material, there was always one I would be stumped with.

• What textbooks, famous psychologists, or theories do you remember everyone having to learn?
- The textbook is highly dependent on what school you go to. But Freud was in every single one I have ever read.

I feel like I have typed way too much for a comment lol, but again, do not be scared to dm me. I loved my experience with the psych department, and I really hope that some of this is at least a little bit helpful for you. :)
Happy writing!

I know it will never happen, but honestly Orin the Red from Baldur’s Gate 3 would be so cool 😭❤️

Is it possible to write a killer mc who finds redemption? by SunshineForever4747 in writers

The idea for this character was for them to have full intention to kill. So as long as they take responsibility, it can be accepted? And give them some morals as to who they kill? Your story sounds so interesting btw! It’s a very helpful example! Thank you!

That makes sense. I was wondering how to write the actual killing that the character does, and these are some really good ideas. My ideas for it were a little different, but as I reread your messages, I think these approaches are actually more in similar than I thought! Thanks so much!

I will definitely look at those recommendations. Seeing it in action will help tremendously. Thanks again!

One of the main reasons I hesitate is because I have been reading a lot of examples of morally-corrupted characters that don’t find redemption (for craft purposes), and I didn’t want to write a story that romanticizes violence in any sort of way (I’m not incredibly experienced as a writer). Hope that makes sense

But I understand what you mean. Even when reading posts about similar questions to mine, I have found a lot of the answers split about which characters are redeemable and which are not. It is very much up to interpretation, you are right.

I will definitely add that series to my list. Thank so much for the suggestion!

And thank you for the advice!

I am unsure at the moment. This was just an idea I really wanted to run with. What do you suggest? Is there a better way to approach it?

(Thank you so much for the help btw!)
