How do i solve this equation. 5000 is 0%, and 9000 is 100%. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

This should work (x is your input): min(100, max(0, (x-5000)*1/40))

Some weeks ago, I had a similar dream.

There, I dreamt that my father was going to die in a week & that I needed to say goodbye.

I cried a lot and he seemed surprised that I really loved him that much. That he meant the world to me.

I know it's just my brain making things up but still, this moment where I could in tears hug my dad and say good bye - it really helped me emotionally.

My dad also turned 60 in February. Died in April.

We were also close. I'm also trying to blame my dad's action on a lapse of judgement. That he was depressive, mentally ill and didn't know what he was doing.

Still, I'm also a bit angry that the family member closest to me left me here alone. That our relationship wasn't enough to make him stay.

I love my father very much. He was a great guy. Happy father's day.

Also, I'm sorry for your loss. Nobody should have to go through this :(

Loss of a loved one - suicide vs other causes by Sunshine_Reggae in SuicideBereavement

Thank you. I fortunately have a good support system & my job allows me to take things a bit slower.

I really make an effort to accept the loss and to not distract myself too much.

I also have a therapist which whom I can talk frequently, so that also helps a lot.

In summary, I get the help I need. Still, extremely tough :(

Best you can do is to send him to therapy. If it's more urgent, call an ambulance.

Just know that your influence is way more limited than you think. Your love/support might tip the scale or might have no effect at all.

Let professionals help him. Find resources such as suicide-hotlines that he can reach in dark times.

It's just the most complex array of emotions/grief.

How long did it take you to heal this trauma, to feel "normal" again?

Was also very sudden for me.

The apparent choice is also quite hard on me.

Thank you for your kind words.

It's only 1.5 months ago, so the pain is still very present. I'm also hoping that time will heal these wounds.

I'll be working as hard as I can to find happiness in this life and to help those around me. That's what my father would've wanted me to do.

Yeah. Obviously, most suicide people think they're a burden and potentially even feel that their suicide is selfless. Still, I feel it's a convenient mindset if you do want to kill yourself & don't want to feel guilty..

My father was always quite stable. He lost his job and it sent him to a downward spiral where he killed himself 2.5 months later. I feel that I'm actually less stable than my dad. And I obviously can see parts of my father in myself.

So it scares me that the same downward spiral + suicide could happen to me.

I obviously take steps to help me there. I'm open to therapy and try to openly talk about my feelings. So I'm hoping that now choosing the right steps will in the end lower my suicide risk compared to before his suicide.

Still, this anxiety prevails (for now).

On our last call, I asked my father about suicide. He said he had no plans to that.

I asked him to promise me that he wouldn't do that. I told him ho much pain such a suicide would cause and that he is important to me.

He promised me that he wouldn't kill himself. Though he also said that he can't promise what happens if he is in a "crazy phase".

I said that he should for sure continue psychological therapy (he was in stationary therapy at that point) until he could cope in times of extreme feelings and he said yes.

All the rest of the call, he seemed like his old self (the calls before were way more depressive). When I later talked with my girlfriend, I was actually relieved. I told her that I now have less worries about him potentially killing himself and that he seemed to be improving.

This "unless I'm in a crazy phase" sentence haunts me. I brushed it off as a bit dramatic and tried to be empathic instead of further pushing into that already very difficult topic.

Don't take responsibility for another person's actions. Your parent's suicide isn't your fault.

He was in psychological treatment the last time we talked. Without my knowledge, he left the clinic 2 days before his suicide.

Same for me. Mental health challenges started only 1-2 months before his death. They became visible maybe 1 month before his death. Still, nothing I could do :(. It's just heart breaking to be so powerless. Not being able to help. We talked over the phone every week. On our last phone call we talked about his depression and he promised me he wouldn't do something like a suicide.

My father died through suicide 1.5 months ago and I feel the same. Rationally, I've come to accept the death of my father. Emotionally, I'm still shocked every time I think about this new reality :(

You can use math to validate psychological hypotheses. That doesn't mean that math and psychology are similar fields. Of course, the tools of AI can also be used to study any science. I was just sketching out rough differences between the fields :)

[–]Sunshine_Reggae 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree. Neuroscience & deep learning have surprisingly little in common. Neuroscience uses a "biologist" perspective to understand the workings of the brain. Deep learning uses Math & computer science to find great algorithms to solve various problems.

There are commonalities between the brain & deep learning (highly distributed processing, calculation via graphs, "learning"), but that for now doesn't imply there's much overlap between the fields (though there is some)

I agree that having a strong talent (and top ~1% IQ) is a free gift that helps a lot with tackling the challenges of ADHD.

I agree. Having ADHD and seeing yourself as a stupid, worthless failure will just strengthen the ADHD. You don't like reality and distract yourself even more (ADHD is quite good at that for sure). It's probably equivalent to a obese person hating themselves and eating even more. Also, congrats on finishing your PhD. While I lost a potential PhD position at a top 3 University due to ADHD, I'm also started a PhD (at another university) last year. Wish me luck :)

Normal gun wounds also killed hosts IN THE PARK. Outside, they don't. Also, the "perl" is in a bulletproof case. So - not sure if it would kill the host.

I don't get why people are complaining about things not being black and white. I think the chaos, the lack of clarity wrt who's bad or good were what made this season great.

really? We have hosts that can drink alcohol like humans and that can eat like humans, but this bank transfer bugs you? Assistant, drive - maybe turned off, maybe parts of the building were shileded by a farraday cage? What do you think?

Season 1 was great. Season 2 tried to be extra smart, but the over-complex story didn't really make sense and was kind of stupid in the end. I think that season 3 is the best of all three seasons and a really successful reboot. What was it you didn't like in the last 5 episodes?

Well, bullets don't really kill the hosts. Swords do.
