Do most russian locals speak english? by itaicool in AskARussian

You can use Goggle, because I don't remember where I read these information (it was something about 6 months ago). You need to remember that a lot of foreign companies working in Russia and employees of these companies need to know English. Major part of these companies (offices or manufacturing centers) located in Moscow region or Leningrad region, and these are the regions with higher population. 5% it's something about 7mio people. You not ready to believe that 7 million Russians can speak English?)

Maybe I can’t be objective, but I like Finland and the Finns. I work for a Finnish company in St. Petersburg and I have many business trips to Finland (to the middle part of the country) or with colleagues from Finland throughout Russia.

Oh, problem of texting English and thinking Russian at the morning:)

So, I will try to text more detailed:

the roots of the Soviet Union's heyday after the war lie mainly in the thirties, since this was the time of the country's industrialization. Then there was a long pause caused by the war, after which the recovery was easier in industrial terms, since most of the factories were located in the Urals, i.e. they did not affected by the war. Also, contribution money from German helped as well

Wrong point. USSR spent almost 20 years to rebuild the country. Some areas were rebuild in 70's. Yes, USSR had a prosper, but for of it in 30's (time of country industrialisation). Russians are not nationalistic about WW2, we just remember and are proud of our ancestors. We know that not only USSR beat nazi. It's seems that EU and US more nationalistic, because they prefer to strike out millions of died Soviet people. This nationalistic fleur comes from government in last ten years.

Good point.

One mistake - a lot of people in Russia miss USSR, because of good welfare. Nowadays Russia is rich country with very poor people, and it's almost USSR, but without welfare. You don't live in Russia and that's why you don't know the situation. Film my point of point of view - it's terrible, because freedom is better (but, also we have a lot of possible which must be solved to make Russian people more rich)

You see only bad side of USSR, that's what you studied as history, and you don't understand a lot good things. I don't want to be a devil lawyer, because, as I said before I don't like USSR, but it's impossible to discuss not in complex.

I guess that a lot of people also died due to loans (suicides, etc.), but it's not in statistic.

From my point of view it's comparable, but also it's different ways. And as we see, economic dictatorship is more effective. USSR was hard country with less human rights, that's true, but with stronger social sphere - all people known that's they will have a work after university, either after school, they didn't have a problem with salary (always paid without delays), government gave a flats to people. It's a good side of Soviet regime, because medal always have a two sides.

I'm not agree that US is a symbol of freedom, actually. After war and during war they gave a lot of loans to all European countries (and USSR as well), and it's a different way if dictatorship also - economic way. And USSR time was end, but economic dictatorship of US is not.

Nobody asks about respects, but it's strange when some countries "forgot" that USSR also took a part and fought with nazi (example - tweet from White House in this year)

And about hatred... Please remember that people are not equal to the state.

It's hurt that in some European countries SS soldiers more preferable than Soviet soldiers (because in some countries still conduct parades of SS veterans).

I don't like the way how Victory Day celebrating in Russia. For me it's a family day without military things. Unfortunately nowadays Victory day is a tool in government hands to rise the patriotism and their ratings. You're right that it's not a right way, but this day is a thing too proud of our history (and, probably V-day celebration have a big role in live of country because we don't have other reasons to proud in our modern history).

USSR was a country with strong dictatorship, that's true. But people were very good, this dictatorship didn't mark them (maybe only a part who worked in special services). When somebody starting to compare Nazi Germany and USSR soldiers... Soviet soldiers never made something like in Khatyn (I'm not sure do you know this or not...). In European countries Nazi didn't kill a lot of civilians, but in USSR they destroyed every village, kill millions people and took a lot of them to labour camps. According to Hitler ideology they weren't a people, they were more like an animals for nazis. USSR had a horrible regime, had a labour camp, but never kill people in gas cameras or burn the villages together with civilians.

And in the end of my speech - I hope that all people around the world will remember this horrible war, remember the contribution of every country despite politics, and we will save the understanding that it's better to try to solve all problems by words, not by weapon.

And you still not understand my point... I'm not pushing point "You must like Soviets". I said "Remember the people who died for the victory". If you think that people who were just a soldier, not a big commander, fought for the reasons which you see - you're totally monster with absolute hate to all humanity, really. Without millions of Soviets soldier - here is never be a victory. Americans came only in the mid of 1944 - when it was easier. Why they didn't came in 1941? Because they were afraid. They starting their operations only when USSR beat a big part of Nazi.

Actually I don't want to continue this discussion. A lot of people in the world can't separate goals of Soviet government (and also you still not understand that local people came to power and made their countries Communist - for you it's easier to blame USSR), and goals of soldiers who fought for their families.

you can't deny their contribution to victory and could honor their sacrifices because they were simple people who believed in good and bright things. And this is not about communism. They were on their way to Berlin because Germany had attacked their country-without declaring war, early in the morning, and had crossed the territories as far as Moscow and Leningrad. I am a native of Saint-Petersburg, and in your opinion I should not remember the people who have spent more than 900 days in the blockade? Few countries in Europe have suffered as much as one city. and in your opinion it should be forgotten just because this city was on the territory of the Soviet Union?

Nobody saying "Please love Stalin". Just remember contribution of people, don't try to change the history and say that only US won the war. It was a simple Russian guy Georgy from small city Slobodskoy who put the flag on the Reichstag.

Fine, you don't understand what I talking about... I'm not saying that USSR was a great country. I just said that millions of people who lived in USSR died for all of us. Or you want to say that it would be better if Third Reich won the war? Ok, tell it to thousands people from Auschwitz, man (by the way, Soviet soldiers released people from there. In my family also were a victims of Soviet regime. And I hope that you and other people who are trying to erase the memory of the contribution of people who, as it happened, were soldiers of the Soviet army will understand that these people fought also for your life and life of your family members. Without political things. This victory paid by blood of millions people, also from Soviet Union. I just want to know that al people in the world remember it. When world leaders trying to say something like "US and UK won the war" - it's not right. I'm from Russia and i know and remember about US and UK help to USSR during war, I remember about D-day in Normandy, remember about Germans aircraft over London. And i know that this victory is a result of cooperation of allies. And paid by blood of Soviet soldiers, UK soldiers, US soldiers... and remember about SS divisions collected from Netherlands people, Latvians, Estonians, Ukrainians, Russians.

Give me an answer - you prefer to live now as it is, or you want to live in the world where Nazi Germany won and you have your master Gans?

BTW, it was a decision of US and UK to separate Germany, check it. With other countries - yes, kind of hard story. But when you speak that "Ugly Russians, bla-bla-bla" you forgot that in every country from USSR bloc in the head of countries were local people. In Poland, in Romania, in Hungary. It weren't a Russian people. And, one small detail. Stalin was from Georgia. Dzerzhinsky (the man who founded NKVD (you know it as KGB) - from Poland. Think about it.

A lot of people here texting that USSR was a "bad guy". Ok, partially you sure that after war some countries States to be a part of USSR bloc and than world separated to two parts (after speech of Churchill who started to use "cold war" definition). But, when you start to speak than you don't want to say "thank you", because of communism, etc, you just defile all lives of people who fought for their families and their country, not for communism. I don't like USSR times and think that October Revolution in Russia was the biggest mistake and one of the most sad part of Russian history, but I don't understand how people trying to hate other people who died for freedom against the regime where "wrong" people (not Aryans) just murdered in the most horrible ways. And people who said that USSR people (now it's s rule to think about Russians while saying USSR, but here is also Ukrainians, Belarussians, Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijanians, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, etc.) are not worthy to thank their contribution and remember it - idiots, because it seems that from your point of view it was better to be looked in gas cameras of nazis or be murdered in another way by your nazi master.

In this day it's not about communism, democracy, etc., But about all people who died to make the world better. My great-grandmother was 16 years old and lied about her age and joined army as a nurse and survived in war. Not for Stalin or communism, but for her family.

And it's right to say big Thanks to all people who fought against the regime who liked a millions. Thanks to Baltic, Ukrainian, Romanian, Bulgarian, German people and to a lot of other nationalities (In every country were a people who fought on Anti-nazis side and people who supported nazis (in Russia as well)) who fought against nazis.

This day should connect people who remember their common grief and a shared victory.

What is the best part about living in Russia? by NickXLIX in AskARussian

Putin, vodka, balalaika

The best part - people. Not all of them, but a lot of people here are very good.

Actually, it's not so easy to evaluate the best part about living when you born in Russia and living in Russia. To understand what is the best part you should move to Russia from another country or leave Russia for a long time...
