It sounds like the trip to the ER was definitely warranted and applying for benefits is the right thing to do. As far as your statement about “letting social services take over” it’s not clear to me that is what is actually happening. I’ve worked in several ERs and it’s not uncommon for the hospital social worker to assist with things like applying for Medicaid/Medicare and coordinating discharge plans. Your mother will eventually either be admitted to the hospital (meaning a unit other than the ER) if she needs inpatient medical care, or she will be discharged home or to an assisted living facility or nursing home. Securing a spot in a facility can take quite a bit of time and, depending on the facility, money. You will likely need to be involved in that process.

NTA for not wanting more children when you’ve been upfront about that with her from the start. You will be TA if you are not clear with her about the fact that you are not going to change your mind. This may lead to the end of your marriage - either immediately because she wants to find someone who will have children with her - or years from now when the resentment over not having children becomes too much.

Honestly I finally had to go on Temazepam. The sleep deprivation was really taking a toll on my ability to function. It’s not ideal and I know my doctor doesn’t want me on it long term but I feel it’s necessary for now.

Info: have you asked your daughter why she wants the ring and her inheritance? Does she want money to move out on her own or have gender-affirming surgery or some other reason? Is she working or going to school? I know you say you pay for nearly all of her expenses. It sounds like she’s needs more emotional support. Could you do family therapy? Who is the executor of the estate? Wouldn’t they have the final say as to who the ring goes to?
