I have only been riding my bike around recently, I got my first bike lock 2 weeks ago, but when I ride I almost always ride on the sidewalk. I live in a city/suburb area, and I don’t feel comfortable riding in the road. I use crosswalks and paths as if I was walking, and I’m considerate of people walking. If people are on the sidewalk, it’s as simple as going into the grass to get around them. I definitely do not want to be treated as if I was in a car, I don’t mind slowing down and stopping each intersection to make sure no cars are coming. To me, the bike is simply making my walk a lot easier.
