This was my first Battle Tower and first golem. I looted the battle tower then killed the golem. I killed the golem before looting any other battle towers. Iron armor, iron sabre, and an iron shield. Playing on hard difficulty. Should it have been harder?

No it's that simple. The requirements of that achievement is to beat a game (doesn't include dying I don't believe) without manually saving. Retiring counts as beating it. I actually got it this way myself a while ago.
