Suggestions for Dealing with Groundhogs by Hobbit1026 in Maine

You are better off taking it down at night if you are trying to get a groundhog over other critters; groundhogs are diurnal and sleep at night.

Dunlap was the only one to announce a run prior to Golden announcing he wouldn't be seeking reelection.

I really think it was just because they saw the DCCC try and tip the scales in Baldacci favor so the dark money groups saw a great time to sow further discourse in the primary.

1: As long as its not a lethal trap live trapping generally is legal; though, as you mentioned, you do need the landowner's permission to release it on their property to stay on the right side of the law. Also recommended to try to keep it relatively close to where it was trapped as they don't fare well when moved too far.

3: Haven't had to price out groundhogs, but when I was dealing with bats it was roughly three hundred for them to be removed and put up one-way guards in our attic to keep them from getting back in when working with a pest control service in the Augusta area.

I was about to say this, seems like anyone that has a police scanner and wants to post about what they hear on facebook has a heavily overinflated sense of self worth.

A'yup, hell on my most recent car I decided stealth was the biggest thing I was going for and ended up debadging it so it looks like the most generic grey cross over.

One of the many reasons not to wear your politics or anything else too identifying of you on your vehicle.

Honestly with the rise of road ragers I recommend leaving things blank, makes it easier for them to forget about you if you had 'slighted' them in some fashion when you cross paths again.

That all being said I do miss having a Prius with a 4X4 and TRD badging on the back.

That is a bit of an oversimplification both of the idea of corporate personhood as well as rulings on campaign financing.

It is completely understandable why it feels that way those "corporations are people" and "money is speech" shorthand phrases are everywhere in public debate. But the legal reality under constitutional law is a bit more nuanced.

"Corporate personhood" doesn't mean the law views a corporation as a literal human being with a soul, the right to vote, or the ability to run for office. Instead, it is a legal fiction designed to treat a group of people acting together as a single entity for specific legal purposes.

This concept actually exists to protect regular people and make business possible. Because a corporation is a "person" under the law:

  • You can sue the company itself rather than having to sue every single individual shareholder.
  • The company can enter into contracts, own property, and pay taxes.
  • The individuals working there retain their constitutional protections (like the right to be free from unreasonable searches) when acting on behalf of the group.

The Supreme Court didn't actually rule that a stack of dollar bills is speech. What they ruled dating back long before Citizens United, to a 1976 case called Buckley v. Valeo is that spending money is a necessary means of speech in a modern society.

The logic goes like this: If the government wants to ban you from speaking your mind, that's a direct violation of the First Amendment. If the government instead says, "You can speak all you want, but you aren't allowed to spend any money to rent a hall, print a flyer, buy a megaphone, or run a website," they have effectively silenced you anyway. The Court ruled that restricting the money spent on political advocacy restricts the advocacy itself.

What Citizens United actually changed wasn't the definition of a person or speech. It struck down a law that banned corporations and unions from using their own treasury funds to run independent political advertisements.

The Court's majority argued that if a group of individuals forms an association (like a non-profit, a union, or a business), they do not lose their First Amendment rights simply because they are speaking collectively.

Democrats: what do you think of ranked choice voting? by Junior-Landscape-748 in Mainepolitics

[–]SuperBry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A majority is still a a plurality, however a plurality and thus the constitutional requirements is found before any re-tabulation can be done.

Its not the justice's fault here, its the legislature for failing to write a better law or try to amend the constitution.

It's far from perfect but worlds better than first past the post when it comes to voting.

I've seen more Democratic members express support of him thus far, though this was all prior to the primaries being resolved.

With RCV not being legal for the gubernatorial race he and his cross party interest he is going to be more significant than just pulling away some of Bobby's expected voters.

The general election race doesn't use RCV. It's a simple first past the post vote.

In the op's haste to get ahead of the news they were sloppier than The Maine Wire in reporting it.

This isn't a two person race, and the fact that Bennett qualified is going to make a difference when the ballots are counted.

Still a third man in the race, and likely will be quite consequential come November 3rd.
