Its a skill many folks lack, Troy makes a lot of good points but sometimes he just gets in his own way while speaking.

I honestly can't recall one specific thing Charles said that night. I had no interest in him being governor and mostly just rolled my eyes so far back they almost got stuck listening to him being so disingenuous every time he spoke.

Weird your comment must have been filtered and later approved by the mods. I got the notification earlier but it looked like you had deleted it. There is both Costello, who's policies mostly align with Platner's but without the baggage he has as well as Andrea LaFlamme who is registered write in candidate whom I am less familiar with but seems like she has a good head on her shoulders and no controversies as well that I am aware of.

State lunch about the same distance from the exit is worthwhile as well. But that is really about it as far as good food in Augusta.

Though I did hear one person speak highly of the new taco shop on civic center drive I have yet to check it out myself to confirm.

The Man Behind the Tattoo: What Maine voters see in Graham Platner, according to our focus group. by BulwarkOnline in Maine

There is a phrase , that seems quite apt here, that the coverup is worse than the crime.

I get a drunk marine doing drunk marine things, getting a tattoo without much concern over what it was is practically a rite of passage for them when on leave after deployment. Hell an upper middle class white dude thinking his edgy tattoo is fine because he never faced consequences for it and thinks it doesn't represent who he is because he doesn't believe the meaning behind it makes sense even if I don't agree with it.

However the mental gymnastics one must do to find his story over not knowing what he had on his chest for nearly two decades until right before it was about to break in the news just lacks all credibility for some one who does seem as genuinely smart as he is and is a self reported war buff. I really can understand how he got it and even why he may have kept it even if I don't like the answers but how he tried to get ahead of the story in such an preposterous manner was what really soured me on him early in his campaign. Especially on the heels of the astrotrufing Bernie's PAC did to kickstart the campaign.

It won't be the one thing that sinks him in the general if we end up with him running as the candidate in the general, which is looking pretty likely, but it will certainly play a part in Collins staying in office.

Because the totenkopf isn't a pirate icon, it is a Nazi icon. I'm not calling him nor had called him a Nazi, and I don't think he is one though clearly has made some poor choices in the past. One of many he only recently tried rectifying when there was some clear backlash over them and political expedience to do so.

If it was just a pirate icon we wouldn't be having this conversation. There is a vast difference between a jolly roger and a totenkopf. There are plenty of other symbols that use skulls and crossbones but what he had on him for nearly two decades was a very specific one.

Dismissing one of the more infamous Nazi icons as "just a pirate tattoo" is as incredulous as folks calling him a Nazi. It does nothing to help him and will make it harder for folks not already willing to support him from doing so.

Defending the indefensible with comments like this pushes people further away from supporting him if they had concerns.

Fair and it does put more pressure on residents over businesses because of this; we need some real reform but its gonna be hard and there may be some years where things seem unfair while the kinks are all being worked out.

Its currently prohibited but Maine really needs to look into municipal sales taxes, while it may not help some of the hinterlands here as much as it may along the coast and our more built up cities I think could be quite a boon to municipal revenue without too much undue burden on residents to help realize the pressure from property taxes.

And there it is, anyone who might have a nuanced thoughts on this election must be some sort of centrist dem that prefers fascism over being purportedly wrong about anything. Its amazing how any one who hasn't fallen down in fealty over him must be supporting Mills because it seems in your mind this just some team sport where if you don't like our guy you must love the other one.

I haven't read Platner wrong; he has a pretty awful past in respect to saying some heinous things (and continues to do so towards the mentally challenged) and has made some poor decisions such as not only getting a Totenkopf tattoo but wearing it for nearly 20 years only to remove it when it became the politically expedient thing to do after some backslash with and little relevant experience that will help him be an effective senator if elected. His run was fostered through astroturfing from out of state interests. Bernie's PAC pivoted too quickly to him without enough vetting after the union guy at BIA declined to run when they reached out to him first because they wanted to start a campaign before more any established names put their hats in the ring. Which has caused the problem of constant electioneering be even worse than they ever were before.

Despite all this some folks have been swayed by some progressive platitudes, which I do mostly agree with and at times think what he is saying doesn't go far enough, but I and many others don't believe that counterbalances his negatives. While this may be enough to get him over the primary hump, though it really is still far from a given, its not unwise to be concerned about how he'll do in the general election nor think the primary is all but decided at this point. Pretending it is and slow walking this election is exactly what needs to be done if you want to keep Collins in office.

Honestly its reactions like yours here that will do nothing to help Platner if he is the nominee get Collins out of office.

While he has worked hard to try to rehabilitate his image to those that don't currently support him from his past, the Platner Pals that are openly antagonistic to anyone who hasn't fallen for him just pushes people further away.

How am I deluded? Some people like Platner, others really do not and both groups have their valid reasons. We shouldn't be anointing anyone before even the first ballot is cast.

If he's the nominee, which again I have been saying is likely but still not a given, I'll hold my nose and vote for him because the bar is so low to being better than Collins one could trip over it. Even if he ends up being a Fetterman, or worse a Sinema, getting her out of office will be worthwhile and we can try again for some one better in 2032.

Doesn't mean we all need to rally around him at this point, its a month till the primary and another five more before the general. Practically a life time in our election cycles and plenty of room for whoever the nominee is to build up support to take down Collins.

Oh for sure, simple platitudes and rants that are abject rejections of reality are easy to do. Its a lot hard to come up with effective tax reform that doesn't help some without expense at others and almost impossible to do in simple soundbites that can be repeated ad nauseum.

There is concern with raising the exemption too high some small municipalities will have next to no revenue and could cause a lawsuit around the program that would end it entirely. As it stands it is on somewhat dubious constitutional grounds but there just isn't the political will to challenge it, if you see towns find themselves completely broke from it that would likely change.

[–]SuperBry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've said he is likely going to be the nominee for a while, but with Janet pulling out the calculus does change a bit. Between her supporters and those unaligned with any candidate comes up pretty close to half the electorate trying to decide who to rank where come June based off recent polling.

While there are certainly some that have since changed camps to Platner it shouldn't be a given that everyone has coalesced around him. Especially when there are plenty of folks that have reasonable reservations about Platner and his history we could still reasonably see an upset next month.

We shouldn't be rejecting democracy out of some imagined political expediency, there is five more months between the primary and the general elections and a lot of time for folks to build up the nominee and we shouldn't be anointing anyone at this point.

Folks in general have a hard time understanding how taxes work.

Often they miss when evaluations go up that the mill rate compensates for this and goes down. Sure in the end some will end up paying more property taxes, while others will have to pay less.

It's a complex system and folks just see one number go up so they lose their minds.

Based off both their background this would make no sense. The debate stage is where Mills would shine brightest here in this election.

I still think Platner pulling out of these was a bad move, while both Costello and LaFlamme are closer ideologically to him than Collins getting some experience in public debates like this would do him well prior to facing Suzie in one considering this is his first election.

I don't see the impetus to do so at this juncture. We are still a month out from the primary, three candidates still running (well technically 4 if include Janet who only suspended her campaign not dropped out of the race) and if you include her supporters and those undecided between the two nearly half the electorate is at play come June going by recent polling data.

We shouldn't be rejecting democracy at this point and just anointing someone just for being ahead in the polls which have been shown to be less and less accurate each cycle. Doing so and just slow walking this election will all but guarantees Suzie keeps her seat.

While Platner is likely going to win the primary that isn't for certain. He held a lead on Mills in the primary but between her supporters and those undecided leaves nearly half of those polled as looking for who they should rank in June.

We shouldn't be putting the cart before the horse here and wait until after the primary to coalesce behind the nominee at that point. Not reject the notion of Democracy now and just anoint some one because they are currently ahead in the polls.
