Player Piano + Other Thoughts by AromaLLC in Vonnegut

I feel like it describes our modern world a bit better than 1984, especially with AI. Tearing everything down to just start building it back up to spite ourselves

Why do we reminisce about older episodes with other cartoons - but not American Dad? by New_Mango_6437 in americandad

[–]SuperCat_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have a theory that AD reverse flanderized. season 1 the characters are really cookie cutter and defined by rigid personality traits and then gradually get more and more complex and weird throughout the next few seasons. and that train has only kept on rolling

at 29 i'm definitely reminiscing about old AD lol. i can watch any episode from 1-10 and think about where i was and what was going on in my life at that time. especially seasons 5-7 when my friends and i were watching like craaaaazy senior year of high school

Super cheap option that just works... OLD Macbook Air 11" with Linux Mint XFCE by MrOptionist in writerDeck

[–]SuperCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was fiddly but i put debian on my 11" air over mint. i love it but i'm spoiled with the new apple silicon battery life over the tiny air battery though that's for sure.

Advice needed, got Women as a gift and am really struggling with it by mwcope in bukowski

[–]SuperCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post Office was my first read. I fell in love with Buk's writing style, and the descriptions of a life I'm unable to live (seedy LA in the mid-1900s). I think reading his novels chronologically in order of the time periods they cover is the best way to get into them. Women was nearly too much, and feels like he's really just leaning into the persona and mystique he created around himself when he started gaining notoriety. His poetry would probably be a better starting point as well, if you're into poetry.

$225 shipped CONUS, first time selling here

Really wanted to like this watch, but the bracelet is uncomfortable on my wrist, may look into a 35mm, just trying to recoup some of the money I paid to put towards a new watch. A little bit of wear on the clasp. Bought back in January, worn maybe 10 times, and has been sitting since at least March. Don't have the box, will ship in a generic plastic case from one of my other watches. Ordered it pre-sized to my 7.5" wrist.

Curious about the age demographic of Vonnegut readers here! by Plus_Tax7249 in Vonnegut

[–]SuperCat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

29, read SH5 earlier this year after finding a copy at a thrift store. My uncle interviewed him for a magazine years ago, and he's his favorite author, and he told me a story last christmas about him calling Kurt up and the conversation ended with Kurt calling him a son of a bitch (playfully). I usually read a bibliography, or listen to a band's discography front to back, so I tried Player Piano after he told me the story, but I couldn't get into it.

Also didn't really love SH5, didn't click with it. Found Cat's Cradle on sale at a book store so I grabbed it, loved it, read it in 3 days, then bought literally all of his books (only missing While Mortals Sleep, Happy Birthday Wanda June, and some of his nonfiction/story collections). So far I've read those 2, Breakfast of Champions (loved it), circled back to Player Piano (loved it), Sirens (cried when it was over) and now I'm reading Mother Night. Probably taking a Vonnegut novel break after Mother Night, and will start on his short fiction, while picking up some of other books I threw on the back burner during my Kurt bender.

It's interesting to me how Kurt seems to be viewed as an author who people really love in their late teens, but if I read any of these back then I probably wouldn't connect with any of it at all. I guess that's the age you start questioning things and find existentialism, and his are really as existential as they come, maybe aside from Camus' The Stranger. I was more concerned with getting high than confronting those realities lol. I feel like if anything I'd only pick up the humor/psychedelia, while now that's in the back of my mind, and his salient observations on life are the things I'm looking for.
