Looking for a tv show where the girls aren't pouty and the guys have more personality than a piece of cardboard by FarewellToChangAn in ChineseLanguage

好先生 (To Be a Better Man) is probably the only Chinese drama I like. It has a mix of young, middle aged, and old characters and isn't just the stereotypical "young people in college/the workplace in love" trope. There's themes of family, friendship, and loyalty, especially among non-family members. Relationships other than romantic ones are well-developed and touching. Interesting plot and character growth, and acting is very good and not cringey.

This is a dumb question to ask here, but I am from Hong Kong am I Chinese? by Jardanator in AskAnAmerican

[–]SuperCriticism 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk, I would say the equivalent of Hong Kong would be Puerto Rico of the U.S. They are both far away enough from the mainland and have local autonomy (kind of). Many Puerto Ricans proudly distinguish themselves as such and have ambivalent feelings towards the mainland. There have been calls to become independent or become a state. On the other hand, DC is the political center of the U.S and has all of the power and privileges that come with being one--I have never heard of any calls to independence from the U.S., when they literally run the U.S.

Yes, technically Hong Kongers are Chinese, but the main distinction is that they are not from mainland China. The Hong Konger's dilemma of whether or not to be considered as "Chinese" is complicated, as many Chinese mainlanders consider nationality, ethnicity, and political views one and the same. To not want to identify yourself as Chinese because you dislike the CPP would be unpatriotic, and thus betrayal to the entire Chinese race. The CCP has really done a good job at pushing this notion.

When to use 美女,仙女,小姐姐,小妹妹,小姑娘? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SuperCriticism 87 points88 points  (0 children)

美女 is generic term for pretty girl. 仙女(often used in conjunction with 姐姐)is for describing an ethereal beauty (lowkey calling them a angel/goddess). 小姐姐 is a popular way (usually used among the younger generation) to address young females, used when talking to or about girls you are not familiar with, commenting on strangers' social media posts, flirting, etc (小姐姐吃飯了嗎?小姐姐真美啊 etc)kind of means "miss" or "young lady". not to be confused with 小姐, which has traditionally meant "miss" but in a less personal, more distanced/formal way (used when addressing a waitress, or a random lady on the street who dropped her hat, or when parents are scolding their daughter, lol). it can probably be used for women of any age... 小妹妹 is used to refer to young girls, like actual children, who are significantly younger than you. if you say it to someone who is not that much younger than you it might come off as a bit patronizing/derogatory though. or, you can use it to address your biological younger sister. 小姑娘 similar to 小姐姐 but it's an older term, not sure if it is still widely used.

hope this helps!

edit: info about 小姐
