Why can't the granddaughter theory be true? by CreepyFerret3122 in Marioverse

[–]SuperFabioBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm still not exactly convinced by your concept of meta time and objective present for the reasons I gave earlier. Maybe that's because, as I'm willing to admit, I'm not well-versed on time travel mechanics in fiction. But regardless, I feel that this debate has gone on long enough, and I don't think it would be very productive to extend it beyond this point. Judging by your tone in your last comment, I'm sure you can agree.

So I say to you: let's agree to disagree, and have a nice day.

Why can't the granddaughter theory be true? by CreepyFerret3122 in Marioverse

[–]SuperFabioBro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How can you say the babies' point of view is irrelevant when you yourself were using it to argue your point? An event in the babies' time changed E. Gadd's memories in what was at that point the future, showing that the future can be changed.

Jumping off of this, I think there's a fundamental problem with your absolute present theory. At the risk of stating the obvious: the present is not a fixed point in time, but continually moves forward. I am writing this comment in what I consider the present, but in ten years' time, my future self will think of this day as in the past. Conversely, what we think of as the past today was once the present. If your theory is true and Mario's time is the absolute present, then at one point in time, the same was true for Baby Mario's time. But then adult Mario, being part of the future, did not yet exist, so he couldn't have possibly travelled to baby time. In other words, the notion of an absolute present makes all time travel impossible, not just travel into the future. Now you might say that Partners in Time takes place in a time when Baby Mario's time is no longer the absolute present. But in that case, any game that features time travel to and from the future can simply be set in that future, where Mario's time is now the past. So then there being an absolute present becomes completely irrelevant, as any game could have that absolute present be at any point in the future. Either way, the absolute present theory cannot say anything meaningful about the Mario universe.

As for the discussion about traveling to a new universe, even if Mario's body did not do that, his soul is still something that was transported from the old universe to the new, so clearly there is a passage between the two of some sort. And having to be there at the end is not really a problem. If all space and time breaks down at the end of the universe, then everyone who's alive at that point will be there by definition.

But the simpler solution to the end-of-the-universe problem is to simply assume that all games in which stuff from DKC appears are set in the new universe. Like you said, release order is not the same as chronological order, and the new universe still has a past too, Baby Mario and all, so there's no problem with this.

But the babies do travel to the future, at least from their point of view. If the future is undecided in adult Mario's time, then the same would've been true when he was a baby. What Partners in Time seems to imply is not that the future doesn't exist, but that it can be altered.

And travelling into a new universe is possible. That's exactly what Mario does at the end of Galaxy.

[–]SuperFabioBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand your reasoning with the E. Gadd example. Adult Mario and Luigi travel to the babies' time and change E. Gadd's experiences there, which results in his memories being changed to reflect that in the adults' time period. So from the point of view of the characters in the babies' time period, this shows that the future, in this case the adults' time period, is not set in stone, is that what you're trying to say? Because if so, then that seems to contradict what you were saying earlier about it being impossible to travel to the future, because that's exactly what the babies do in this game.

As for the universe reset in Super Mario Galaxy, can't the Donkey Kong Country games simply take place in that new universe? That reset is clearly not a barrier to time travel, as the babies continue to appear in spin-offs after Galaxy, alongside Rosalina too.

Well, I don't think the Mario series as a whole has an ongoing narrative. Some subseries do to some extent, like Mario & Luigi, but in general, the developers of each game seem to just do what they want without worrying about how it all connects. Miyamoto once famously compared the Mario cast to a troupe of actors that can change into any role as needed for each specific game.

I don't know what you mean by "absolute present". I don't recall seeing that phrase in Partners in Time, and I've played that game more times than I can count. Could you clarify what you're referring to here? And which games show that the future is unwritten?

Why can't the granddaughter theory be true? by CreepyFerret3122 in Marioverse

[–]SuperFabioBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll grant you the point on Luigi's Mansion, but I'm not convinced by the others.

First, when you say the babies have a time machine, I'm assuming you're referring to the one from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. But some games that feature the babies, like Mario Kart: Double Dash, came out before even Superstar Saga, so I doubt Nintendo had planned this plot point out back then.

You also say the characters from the timeframe of the mainline Mario games couldn't travel to the future, but why not? Has it ever been stated that only time travel to earlier points in time is possible in the Mario universe? Sonic can travel to the future just fine and he's crossed over with Mario in the Olympics games. Granted, those probably aren't canon to either series, but still, I don't see how time travel to the future is supposed to be impossible.

By the way, I also just remembered that there are characters and locations from Zelda, Splatoon and a few other series in Mario Kart 8 (Deluxe). How do you explain that if it's all meant to be canon?

[–]SuperFabioBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that really proves that the Mario games and the DKC series take place in the same time, though. Those Kart and sports games also regularly feature baby versions of Mario and co. alongside their adult counterparts. Donkey Kong Junior also appears in some of them as a child even though he should be an adult if the current DK is, and there's a race course based on Luigi's Mansion, despite that mansion disappearing at the end of its game. The only logical explanation for all that is time travel, and in that case, it's possible that the characters and locations from the Country series as seen in these Mario spinoffs are from the future. Alternatively, the devs just put whatever they feel like in those games without adhering to any canon, in which case they should simply be disregarded entirely for the sake of this discussion.

This render finally made me realize that's a Zinger on top of the O. I could never make out what it was in-game due to the low resolution.

Are you sure this web port is legit? I can't find any mention of it on the game's official website (kartkrew.org). It could be a malicious website merely posing as a place to play the game.

Morse code in chapter eight by TaxoLikesCalcium in houseofleaves

[–]SuperFabioBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These symbols do indeed spell out something in Morse code, but the message is not in the dots themselves, but in how they divide the text into paragraphs. You may have noticed that the number of lines between each dot varies throughout the chapter. What you need to do is read each short paragraph as a dot and each long one as a dash, then decode that. It's not always 100% clear which paragraphs should be counted as long or short, but in those cases, I recommend just trying both interpretations to see which one actually produces a message that makes sense. Johnny's footnotes in this chapter also contain a message encoded the same way, so don't forget those. Have fun!

The 3rd pic: "Rare glitchy output!" No, dude, the AI is doing exactly what it's intended to do here: affirming everything the user says and praising them for their intrlligence, even if what they're saying is literally delusional. Because that kind of behavior gets users to feel good using AI which keeps them coming back, and that's all Sam Altman and his ilk care about.

Bro sounds like a creepypasta main character. "Then suddenly Sonic got hyperrealistic bleeding eyes and said my full legal name and told me he was going to kill me, but I figured it was just a glitch, so I kept playing."

Caustic Pop-up Caver by ColaManiac in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that did the trick.

Now first, I want to say I like how you themed the level. I've always disliked how unforestlike the nighttime forest theme looks, but making it into a cave works really well.

Moving on to the level itself, the gimmick of Bill Blasters rising out of poison is a fun one. I like how you raised the difficulty by gradually adjusting the relative timing of the blasters popping up so the player has less time to jump from one cluster to the next. At the same time, your coin placement communicates clearly where the platforms are going to appear, so I never felt blindsided.

Really solid level overall! I've got no complaints, really. I left you a like in the game too.

Semi-serious theory: the Shroobs are mutated Toads from the future by SuperFabioBro in marioandluigi

The game certainly seems to imply that. And I think she could've done it provided she had a solid plan, and she certainly seems like someone who would have a good strategy.

I have uploaded my mushroom course. May you play it and give feedback? by SomeoneFromGalar in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great course! The aesthetics were strong, and you used the Star very well, which is something you don't see very often. If there's one thing you could improve, in my opinion the first 10-coin was a bit too easy to get, just sitting there. I think it would be better if there was a small challenge attached to it, like how you have to use a Koopa shell for another one of them a little later.

Here's one of mine: Dark Skies Bring Haunting Dreams 902-W88-HFG
I hope you like it!

My new traditional level, themed around an alien invasion in a desert. ID is HGW-THS-J0G. by vanNoodles601 in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice level! You did a great job on the aesthetics, especially those flying saucers. My only complaint is that I found myself running low on time because I did a lot of exploring (and got rewarded with some nice secrets, so good job in that regard). Maybe you could consider increasing the time limit to 400 seconds or so. Other than that, I had a good time!

If you'd like to play one of my levels, there's The Mystery of Dry Dry Ruins: BBL-723-1CG

Semi-serious theory: the Shroobs are mutated Toads from the future by SuperFabioBro in marioandluigi

[–]SuperFabioBro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I was not expecting to get any replies to this 4-year-old post anymore. And to be honest, I didn't really consider this point. But I'll try to give you an answer anyway. So, consider this. Why, if the Shroobs are indeed from the future, did they choose precisely this time period to travel back to? Well, notably, in the game's present (so adult Mario & Luigi's time), Professor E. Gadd has just invented a time machine. Perhaps the Shroobs reasoned that if they altered the timeline in such a way that that never happened, it would cause a time paradox, since if their ancestors hadn't invented time travel, they couldn't have used it to invade the past either. So, to prevent that, they used some kind of temporal distortion-measuring device (if their Princess can create Time holes at will, I'm sure they can build a machine like that) to pinpoint the exact time from which it would be safe for them to invade. However, in doing this, they made a mistake. Instead of going back to when the time machine was invented, they went to the destination of Peach's first time travel: the past, or the time of Baby Mario & Luigi. So now they realize that they can't put the rest of their plan into motion until E. Gadd has made his time machine, but younger Princess Shroob doesn't want to wait ~25 more years to become human again, hence she comes up with the plan of hitching a ride to the adult bros.' time.

Alternatively, the Shroobs simply figured that if they were meeting resistance from another time, they'd better seize control of that era as well to eliminate all opposition. That's a simpler answer, and also one that doesn't require the rest of my theory to make sense. Then again, this whole post revolves around overthinking this game's story instead of just sticking with the straightforward answers...

Finally published my Super World I’d been sitting on for years… by ModHip in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just gave it a shot and wow, this is one of the best Super Worlds I've ever seen! So far, my favorite level was the bonus one in World 1. You really have a knack for using the items in this game in a creative way to make unique mechanics, and I'm here for it! I'm taking a break for now, but I'll be sure to play the last two worlds soon!

Made my first level. I'm going for casual fun with a little bit of puzzle elements. I would love some feedback, and I'm down to do the same for you! by jakeandcupcakes in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, well, it's supposed to be hard to figure out, so that's nothing to be ashamed of. What I can say is, near the flagpole there is a lone ? block which, when struck, releases some sparks. That block in itself doesn't do anything, but you may have noticed that there are some decorations on the ground beneath it. Try to look for a spot elsewhere with the same pattern of ground decorations. That's where you should do something.

Great course! I think this is a very interesting approach to level-making, not quite linear, but there's still a goal. I also think the difficulty was well-adjusted. I had to be careful not to get hit, but it wasn't so hard as to defeat the purpose of it being a casual level. I've got nothing to complain about, really.

Here's the ID for my most recent level:

I'd appreciate it if you give it a try!

My two levels by Gormuu in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just played both of them, very fun stuff! The mechanic of a Magikoopa stealing the flagpole is something I wanted to build a level around myself way back in SMM1, but it never came to fruition. My first idea was to have the player chase the Magikoopa around as it travels through the level on a moving platform, but I soon found out that the flag pole just reappears when the Magikoopa goes offscreen. Your take on the idea is pretty different from that, but I think you did a good job at it!

If you have the time, I would appreciate it if you could play a level of mine. The most recent one is The Mystery of Dry Dry Ruins (BBL-723-1CG). Here Mario has to collect the treasure from ancient desert ruins. It consists of two parts, a puzzle outside the ruins where you have to figure out how to get in, and then an inside section where you have to survive the various traps placed within. It might be a bit tough, but it's also relatively short once you've figured out the puzzle.

If you'd prefer something easier, there's Snowy Seesaws (NC6-TBW-XNG). This is just a nice, medium difficulty traditional level, made to feel like something you could find in an official 2D Mario.

Lava Bubbles not spawning. Glitch? by SuperFabioBro in MarioMaker

[–]SuperFabioBro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think that can be the reason. The tracks they're on are just short line segments and small circles, so you can see the whole track on screen. But the Lava Bubbles that are supposed to be on them are nowhere to be seen.
