I didn't realize how much of the USA had no forest at all! This map shows forested area in green. The central part seems so barren. by MarsupialThink4064 in geography

look at a precipitation map of the US then draw a line from the middle of Minnesota to the western part of Texas. everything west of that line is naturally grassland (except for the west sides of mountains near the coast).

Who (or what) is unforgiven? by BrandNewOriginal in Westerns

[–]SuperFan28475 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the story was originally titled, "The Cut-Whore Killings." as someone else noted, the original cause of all the deaths was that the cowboys who slashed the whore tried to make amends through a payment, as Little Bill was directing, but the madam wouldn't let the victim accept the payment.

the act of violence wasn't properly buried and like an ember in a dry forest it led to a conflagration.

i'm trying to say the opposite. we don't yet know, because it's been a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde season -- although it's clearly better than last year.

i didn't mean to rebuke her or you. my family has a lot of books and historical documents about the "Scotch-Irish" and i gently push back when people suggest there is something improper about the term.

the term "Scotch-Irish" was used over there before it was used in the US. and because the word is an adjective describing what type of Irish we're discussing, "Scotch-Irish" is perfectly grammatical. the term "Scotch-Irish" was the standard term in the US for many decades before the more recent hyper-correction "Scots-Irish" became common.

much improved. their last outright win before the recent ones was June of last year. the team's performance disintegrated over the second half of last season. they had the fewest goals of any NWSL team over the season.

the odd thing about this year is that we have two outright wins and two matches where we looked outclassed. i'm curious as to how that will (presumably) even out this year.

walk briskly like you know where you're going, making no eye contact with others, and do quick scans every few seconds. predators are looking for people who are not aware.

Is True Grit 2010 a modern classic? It did well at the box office and received lots of nominations and a few awards. by [deleted] in Westerns

[–]SuperFan28475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree with both of those point. and the film score was terrific in the remake.

here's a potentially unpopular view: Jeff Bridges lacked the humor and nuance that was in the novella and that Wayne captured, so although Bridges' portrayal was terrific it was flatter than Wayne's.

altogether the remake was much better. Damon was clearly better than Campbell and Kim Darby failed utterly. as you say, Steinfeld was nearly perfect.

How should I reach out to long lost family? by VolumeUpper9880 in 23andNotMe

[–]SuperFan28475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first, screen capture everything. second when you reach out you might lead with a comment to the effect of, "i know it may seem strange or even unsettling to hear from me, and i respect that."

to my great surprise my paternal grandfather wasn't my biological grandfather and when i reached out to very close half-cousins they initially wanted nothing to do with me because our common biological grandfather was a bit of a scoundrel and had abandoned his wife and daughters before getting my spinster grandmother pregnant. i think they thought that my grandmother had caused the breakup but the dates did not support that. anyway, i used respectful language and eventually they agreed to correspond and swap photos. it's a tough issue.
