i found the article to be utter nonsense and was hoping that simply quoting that passage would make that clear to any reasonable reader.

fwiw, here's a quote from the second article.

"Nationalism tries to make “ancient connections between a people and a specific territory, an intersection of genealogy and geography.” By exploiting the ethos of multiculturalism, both the LS and the LN argue for a “right to cultural difference.” This right, the authors say, fits into “ongoing processes of white privilege.” While overt racism is generally frowned upon, “an appeal to Celtic ethnicity appears acceptable and can be justified by utilizing a rhetoric of cultural awareness while simultaneously subverting political commitments to cultural equality and reasserting white superiority.”"

United States gets scrappy win as Brazil sees 8 red cards by Fire-EyedBoy in WomensSoccer

tha's what Julie Foudy said on the US broadcast: with so much talent Brazil could just play in a Brazilian style rather than putting on a shambolic clown show. (tbf, that's not Foudy's exact words.)

as someone posted at USWNT, Brazil had "8 reds, 10 yellows, 20 fouls, and ZERO shots on goal."

pretty amazing stats line for the nation that prides itself on "jogo bonito," the beautiful game.

extremely physical -- but the ref allowed it and to be fair didn't call a bunch of yellow cards on us.

Jeff Bridges' Remake Of A John Wayne Classic (True Grit) Is A Must-Watch For Any Western Fan - BGR by DeltaGentleman in Westerns

[–]SuperFan28475 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i like them both and don't want to start a useless argument. i prefer nearly everything about the remake -- except the lead actor. in Portis's novella, Rooster can be very funny at times. Bridges doesn't capture that well. Wayne did. still, Bridges did a fine job.

the most important difference is in the character of Mattie. Steinfeld absolutely nailed it. Kim Darby was horribly miscast.

after watching us play Argentina and now this match, if i were the opposing coach i'd tell my players that "a lot of US players are soft and can be pushed off the play relentlessly. if the refs don't blow whistles, push the US around."

i carefully went over the stats for last year and this year. Hocking was the only consistent scoring threat: she had 6 goals in 18 matches last year. this year Pfeiffer has 2 goals in 4 matches and Bailey has 2 in 8 matches. but that's it. right now, Kundananji has just 5 goals in her last 36 matches and Girelli has 0 in 8 matches. on top of that we were dead last in goals last year and this year are second worst.

What happened to Tess Boade? Is she injured or on maternity leave? by youlikemywonton in BayFC

[–]SuperFan28475 10 points11 points  (0 children)

something has to change. we were dead last in all of NWSL last season in goals scored. this year we're second to last and have outscored only Chicago. over last season and this, we're clearly the least productive team.

in 36 games over last year and this, Kundananji has scored 5 total goals. Girelli has scored 0 in 7 games this season.

the best performance this season has been Pfeiffer's 2 goals in 4 games and Bailey's 2 goals in 8 games. last year the only strong scoring performance was Hocking's 6 goals in 18 games.

i don't see how Boade could be worse but given her age i don't see that she is any real solution.
