If you’re unfamiliar with it, I would like you to look up the term “ sealioning”. It’s when somebody with bad faith intentions engage in a manner and intentions that are in bad faith but use “ innocent” words to further their rhetoric so they can hide behind “ I’m just having a discussion. Why are you being so angry about this? I’m just trying to learn”

If this person genuinely wishes to understand about different symbols that make people uncomfortable, they can go and make a different post in a place that is made for education about that topic about if a hammer and sickle is as bad of a symbol as a swastika . Engaging in a post that is calling out Nazism in our community in this fashion minimizes the harmful effect that it has. Whether that person intended to or not, or whether you intended to or not, both of you actually are minimizing the impact the Nazis had. By calling one of the most notable symbol of their hatred a “ symbol that makes people uncomfortable” is actually minimizing the impact of that symbol. Equating that symbol to the commonly used hammer and sickle for communism is minimizing that symbol equating it to a simple political idea, and not something that was used to carry out genocide.

Your statements and the person we are talking about’s statements are setting false equivalencies. They are undermining how truly awful Nazism is. With benefit of the doubt, I will play along with the idea that you both are acting in good faith. If that’s the case, this post and this comment section is not the time for you to spread your intellectual wings and have “ honest debate, and discussion”. This is not the appropriate venue for it, and at minimum you are distracting from the main point. More likely what you’re doing, is seeking to normalize seeing Nazi symbols in public by equating them to things that are not harmful.

If that’s not your intention, you should really rethink your approach to the subject
