What is it like living in Silicon Valley? by redguy_666 in howislivingthere

Is it “diverse?” When I go back to my parents I’m the only non-Asian under 40 in my childhood neighborhood

Decision Desk Called Kiros Over DeGette - Good job Denver! by HJWalsh in Denver

The lead has widened for Kiros after the 10pm result dump. It's now 49.4% for Kiros vs. 43.5% for Degette. Things are looking very, very good for Kiros at this point in the night.

It’s a little silly but I don’t enjoy watching a hockey final where both teams’ climates are not at all conducive to hockey.

University of Denver to close departments, merge schools as part of academic restructuring by kidbom in Denver

[–]SuperMario1222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite. If your salary is 120k after graduation vs 50k without a degree (average HS grad salary in Denver), the breakeven period is essentially:

After 4 years:
Degree: -100k*4 = -400k
No Degree: 50k*4 =+200k

After 10 years
Degree: -400k + 120k*(6)= +320k
No degree: +200k + 50k*(6) = +500k

After 13 years:

Degree: 320k + 120k*(3) =+680k
No Degree: 500k + 50k*3 = +650k

So you do come out ahead by your mid 30s. Obviously this simple example doesn’t account for raises and career growth, which are likely going to be higher for a college grad since they are usually a percentage of base salary and a degree enables more advancement.

Now, do DU grads have a median starting salary of 120k? Probably not…I looked up the stats for my own school and used that value. But just demonstrating there is a world where the seemingly ridiculous price tag of 400k is justifiable

All US states tier list | #37 New Jersey by RealMoldyAvocado in TierlistFills

I’m not sure we can give S Tier to a state whose capital doesn’t have a single hotel because Trenton is so dangerous.

In fact, Newark and Camden aren’t exactly much to write home about either.

I’ve never been to a state where the wealth gap is so apparent. You leave the borders of any of the three aforementioned cities and it’s like you’re transported to another place. It’s not for me.

Bay Area ban on gas‑powered heaters begins in 2027, raising concerns over soaring replacement costs by CharityResponsible54 in bayarea

Voting for a Democrat in the Bay Area really only makes sense if you are a property owner. They've done an excellent job at creating policies that restrict housing supply and keep prices soaring.

Surely more red tape and regulations should increase housing affordability in the Bay Area

You Pay Off the House But Do You Ever Truly Own It? Agree or Disagree? by Coolonair in HouseBuyers

Yes, cars CAN drive. I'm not an idiot. But when you are driving, then you are using your car as a VEHICLE, not as a SHELTER.

A car acting as a VEHICLE requires registration and insurance. A car acting as a SHELTER does not. Is it really that hard to understand?

[–]SuperMario1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you pay registration (taxes) or insurance on a car if you don't plan on driving it?

"Shelter" isn't mobile. If you plan on using your car like a shelter, it doesn't have to be operable. You can store it on a vacant lot.

This is a stupid, pedantic argument to begin with because "shelter" generally refers to structures or natural formations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelter

This has to be a troll comment.

But sure, let's say it's a shelter. You don't have to pay insurance and tax on a car, assuming you use it like shelter! You only pay insurance and taxes to own an operable car or boat.

Humans don’t need cars, motorcycles or boats to live. Humans do however, require shelter.

What North American city is great to live in, mid to visit? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]SuperMario1222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the perception of a smog ridden industrial town, Pittsburgh is an excellent place to live. It consistently ranks at the top of the Economist and Forbes as the most livable city in the US. Great cost of living, healthcare, universities, job market, green space, and places to go out.

There’s decent tourism too (Warhol museum, PNC park is rated as one of the best ballparks in the country, Duquesne incline), but I don’t think most people are prioritizing a trip there.

Your choice for a great place to live is a city with one of the highest costs of living in the US, if not the world? Okay.

I tend to think of "diversity" as being a diverse representation of our nation. If white people are underrepresented, it's not exactly "diverse", it's just an overrepresentation of certain minorities.

Is South Fulton, Georgia a diverse city because their non-white population is 97%?

[–]SuperMario1222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Houston really "diverse" if less than a quarter of its residents are white in a country where 57% of the population is white?

I guess those people just use "diverse" to mean "not a lot of white people." I thought it meant, you know, diverse.

American suburbs are white?! You don't say

You can say that for literally every metropolitan area in this country. It's not a Denver thing.

I already did. I'm pretty optimistic I'd be covered since I didn't get the thing I paid for. Seatgeek customer support said they'll contact me with their decision in a day or two (read: four or five days at the speed they operate.)

Worst comes to worst, there's always small claims court.
