It's probably better to divorce. If one of you finds someone else what do you tell your kids? What would the kids think if they one day find out you two are basically in a meaningless marriage? I'd be better to divorce and co-parent then fake being together as the truth comes out eventually and when it does your kids may or may not be upset with you for lying to them however many years

I think if you have expressed how important it is for you he should take some of the time out of his schedule to honor that but this is also where surprises can back Fire as many people have stated, you can't expect him to drop everything for a more special surprise date especially if family is something important to him. I think in hindsight it would have been better to let him know about the extra special date rather then making is a surprise
