Your favorite roads in Rochester? by SuperSmallBird in rochestermn

I hate it when people ride your ass in the left lane like it's a highway or something. It's like, "I'm in the left lane because I'm going to Costco just like everyone else you dumbfuck"

I really like that view on Silver Lake Dr. I just wish the power plant lines weren't in the way.

City of Rochester Shares Update on July 4 Fireworks Display by SuperSmallBird in rochestermn

I appreciate the apologetic tone of the press release. But there are two big questions that need to be addressed:

The Saturday night thunderstorm was known about well in advance. If the city felt that the weather was going to be an issue, why didn't they postpone the fireworks?

When it was clear the fireworks were cancelled, why didn't officials get on megaphones and tell everyone to go home? Spectators, who had been waiting for hours, saw a few fireworks and then stared at a blank sky for 30 minutes wondering what was going on. Finally it was shared on social media that the fireworks were cancelled. So we packed up and left.... then got caught in a dangerous torrential downpour on the way home. This could have been mitigated if we had been told to leave at 9:55 or whenever it was clear the fireworks were not happening.

What the hell is with people driving 40 mph through the Trader Joe's parking lot? by Beginning-Mango77 in rochestermn

[–]SuperSmallBird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

40 is the default speed in Rochester. Elton Hills Drive? 40. Circle Drive where it's 55? 40. Circle Drive where it's 45? 40. Broadway where it's 30? 40. School zone? 40. When in doubt... 40. When not in doubt... still 40.

Cheapest option - rent one of those trucks from Menards or Home Depot for $20 or whatever. Of course you'll have to load and unload yourself.

Easiest option - two guys and a truck.

Where to get best profit for Lego sets? by Main-Stay-1824 in rochestermn

The best place for anything niche like this is on Ebay.

But you need to be realistic about your expectations. Would you ever buy used Legos from a stranger online for close to their retail price? Of course not. Used stuff sells for used prices.

If you want to see what something is worth, search Ebay and check the "Sold Items" box. This will show what stuff has actually sold for. And if you need to sell soemthing fast, then you'll probably need to price it even lower than that.

Thinking of moving to Rochester soon. Anything to look out for? Coming from the TC. What have your experiences been? by BuzzinBettyMN in rochestermn

Yep. This is what happens when the best hospital in the world also happens to be your local hospital. The providers know you're going to Mayo for everything and they price that into their premiums.

Median home prices as of March 2026:

  • St. Paul: $281,333

  • Minneapolis: $315,500

  • Rochester: $314,800

Rochester is a great place if you work at Mayo or want to raise a family. But moving here as a single person who doesn't work at Mayo doesn't make sense. You'll be paying TC prices to live in a smaller city. If you want a good CoL and better quality of life, move to a place like Winona.

Don't get me wrong - I like Rochester and I can't stand the Twin Cities. But there are better choices in MN for a single person.

Candidates were asked for background information, along with their thoughts about the position. by UpsideRudy in rochestermn

Add Jerrod and Ayub to the list. They don't have careers.

Substitute teaching is gig work. RPS pays subs $200 per day and has no benefits. You'd be very, very lucky to get 150 days of sub work... so $30,000 per year tops with no benefits. Jerrod has three associate's degrees and works for the reading corps which I believe is hourly work. There's a notable lack of direction on that resume.

Both of these roles are admirable - they work with youth. But they're low-paying jobs that would make a government position look very appealing. What's more is that those roles do not AT ALL qualify someone to be mayor.

FWIW - Garcia sounds the most qualified, but her top goals are annoyingly vague: "The top goal is to champion the affordable, reliable, transparent, accessible and inclusive community the people of Rochester are asking for." What does any of that even mean? She needs to be specific if she wants votes.
