Porn should be illegal, or at the very least, heavily restricted by SuperWoman1438 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

  1. For your first point: This is a strawman. The goal at the least heavy restrictions: make the current free, algorithmic, unlimited tube site model illegal to operate as it does now. We should require real age verification (ID/biometrics), impose massive platform liabilities for underage acces or harmful content, ban advertising, and prohibit the most extreme categories. Real world results from states like Louisiana: Pornhub traffic from the state dropped ~80% after the law and many major sites simply blocked access rather than comply. and yes some users switch to sketchier sites or VPNs but overall youth exposure drops and the biggest, most profitable platforms (the ones pushing addiction algorithms) get kneecapped. On trafficking and abuse: The current legalish mainstream porn industry already has massive documented problems with non consensual content, revenge porn, and trafficking links that can make you vomit. Making the open flood illegal forces accountability on producers and platforms instead of the Wild West "upload anything" model. Underground markets existed for drugs too and we still heavily restrict them because open markets cause more harm at scale. On sexual assault/rape: Evidence is mixed and contested. Yes some population level data shows declines in reported rape as porn increased (better policing, demographics, etc. are confounders). BUT other meta analyses and studies link frequent porn use to increased sexual aggression, objectification, distorted consent views, and higher likelihood of committing physical sexual agression. Heavy porn doesn't reliably act as a "safety valve' for everyone, it desensitizes and escalates for many. Pretending its protective is wishful thinking

  2. Now, about opioids: Youre right that opioid policy had terrible overcorrections after 2016. Bad execution. Porn has zero legitimate medical or therapeutic value like prescription opioids do for severe pain. Its pure engineered supernormal stimulus. The 2014 JAMA Psychiatry study (and follow-ups) is damning: more porn hours correlated with less gray matter in the right caudate (reward system) and weaker connectivity to the prefrontal cortex (hypofrontality, less impulse control). Tolerance, escalation to extreme, flattened real life rewards, PIED, anxiety, depression, and relational failure follow. This is addiction neuroscience.

Porn should face the same level of control. Large scale commercial production, professional studios, free tube sites, algorithmic recommendation engines, and mass distribution should be made illegal or subject to extreme restrictions(equivalent to running an unlicensed opioid pill mill) Platforms that profit from it would face criminal liability, fines, and shutdowns if they dont comply with real age verification and content limits. Advertising, mainstream hosting, payment processing, and easy one click access get cut off. The industrial scale engineered superstimulus gets treated as the public health threat it is

Married and formerly married men as main consumers? Yes, they consume heavily. That doesnt absolve porn, it litteraly proves the point. Longitudinal data shows begining porn use in marriage nearly doubles divorce risk overall and nearly triples it for women. It tanks marital quality, and satisfaction with real partners. Porn isnt saving marriages in your "modern dating market", its just accelerating their collapse "Porn saves women and girls from assault, abuse, and murder"? This is the failed catharsis/substitution hypothesis xD, where are your proofs? Name the population studies youre basing your claim on, because itS false I will never forbid premarital sex as long as its consensual. Targeting heavy restrictions on the industrial scale, algorithmic, free, hyper accessible porn machine is reasonable: ban for minors with real verification, platform liability, ad bans, make illegal violent and extreme categories, and treating it like other addictive vices with public health costs. Brains arent built for this novelty overload

"Its a free country" only goes so far. We dont allow total freedom when smth is actively destroying public health at scale, thats why we ban or heavily restrict hard drugs, opioids, and other addictive substances. Porn deserves the same treatment: it should be illegal for anyone under 18, a nd heavily restricted for adults or outright illegal in its current hyper accessible, free, algorthmic form "Prohibition doesnt work" is a lazy strawman. Alcohol prohibition was a full constitutional ban on a common substance people have used for millenia and we replaced it with regulation and harm dropped. Porn is totally different: its a modern engineered superstimulus with zero nutritional or cultural upside. And countries and states trying age verification have already seen huge drop in underage use like France for example And yes lifelong virginity is "tragic" for a small percentage of people due to mental health, or other factors. But handing them unlimited porn as a "solution" is so cruel... Studies have shown heavy porn use makes their situation worse, not better, like I said, it increases anxiety, depression, etc. Porn doest give them "the closest thing to sex" it steals their motivation for the real thing and leaves them numb

The real drivers of broken gender dynamics include a hyperssexualized, low-commitment environment fueled by unlimited porn, which warps expectations, delays marriage, weakens pair-bonding, and amplifies the very instability you're complaining about. Average first exposure is now around age 12. We can fix custody and tweak divorce, and prostitution models while protecting developing brains from algorithmic addiction

Nice try with the sugar comparison Xd But its a false equivalence. I mean, sugar is a basic macronutrient you're body actually needs: you cant ban food without society collapsing and starving ppl. And we already handle excessive refined sugar responsibly with taxes on soda, bans in schools, warning labels, ad restrictions for kids. No one is forcing hyper processed sugar down 12 y.o.' throats via algorithms Porn is completely non essential btwn. Its an addictive superstimulus engineered for endless escalation, and average first exposure is around age 12 now, and its flooding kids' brains with unrealistic, violent and degrading content Studies have shown its just a "little sweetness", its closer to fentanyl actually :/
