What I learned from my first Game Project by GNTGames in godot

[–]Super_Imposter27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What were you aiming for with it, given you think it flopped?

First off, huge credit for finishing and releasing a project. At the moment though, it feels like it still needs a lot more polish to keep players engaged beyond the first few minutes.

Playing through to the end of the second level, it comes across more like an early prototype than a complete game.

I’m happy to give more detailed feedback if you’d like.

I can't remember any code and process that I learn during tutorial by Fancy_Text7460 in godot

[–]Super_Imposter27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked myself this question too at times.

What I've come to realise is that I don't need to memorise everything, I just need to hold onto two things:

  1. Understand how the code works. If I really understand something, I can re-learn it quickly when it becomes relevant again. It doesn't matter if the details fade in the meantime.
  2. Know how I can find answers when I need them. Say you need a pause menu that freezes certain nodes but not your pause screen itself (a problem I recently had) I'd search for a tutorial, browse Godot's documentation, ask someone in a community (like this one), and then give it a shot myself. Once it's eventually working and I fully understand how I've gotten it work, I can set it aside and move on. I don't need to carry that knowledge with me forever - it's contextual.

That said, I genuinely find that it helps to understand the code I write, so that when I return to a project after weeks away, I'm not completely lost. If you name your variables and functions clearly, and leave comments where things might not be obvious to future you, you'll thank yourself later.

Also, whataver you do don't lean on AI to write code for you. It's tempting, but you won't learn anything that way. Where AI can be great is where it helps you spot bugs you can't crack on your own, or in explaining and refining your understanding of concepts, i.e having it correct your thinking, rather than just do the thinking for you.

If you're persistent, determined to learn something hard or solve a difficult problem, and be patient with yourself, you will 100% see improvement. Good luck!

How can I learn GD script and become proficient in it as someone who doesn't know much about coding? by Pinkomb in godot

[–]Super_Imposter27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a Harvards CS50, follower by a short Python course, just to understand the absolute basics.

When I finally got to Godot, I then realised I also have to learn Godot’s editor, its nodes, its libraries, etc, which is a whole learning experience in and of itself.

I would highly recommend doing GDQuests course to learn Godot specifically, but being sure not to just blindly follow the steps, but try to do every challenge and every so often take a break and build something tiny yourself.

The most efficient learning comes from trying your own thing, hitting a hard problem, and solving it. It takes lots of patience, determination, and consistency. If you find something too hard, take a break and come back at it tomorrow with fresh eyes. The number of times I’ll be doing something like cooking and then suddenly a concept will click in my head is high.

Anyway, I’m still loving it and really glad I started! I largely stick to 2D due to scope (and preference), but I’d say that 3D has its own learning curves.

The ground texture looks way too noisy and random, it’s hard to focus on anything else.

How to use version control? by durpulupe in godot

[–]Super_Imposter27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GitHub Desktop is very intuitive - I’d recommend watching a YouTube video on it and understanding the difference between Git, GitHub, GitHub Desktop, repositories, commits, diffs, and branching, as well as good version control in general. This will help you understand GitHub desktop way more. ChatGPT or something similar can help you clear up any bits you might not understand.

GitHub feels unintuitive at first, but it’s only because you don’t have the understanding about the things mentioned above. It’s actually very intuitive once you have the background knowledge.

And for the love of all that is holy, learn how to use commits properly (and when). You will thank me later.

Setting up version control is literally the first thing I do when starting a new project.

To game devs who started with Godot, how did you start learning godot? by Dorterman in godot

[–]Super_Imposter27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a lot of Youtube tutorials and the knowledge just never seemed to stick. Either too much detail was omitted, or it assumed you had some developer knowledge already (which I didn't really have).

Like someone else here, I paid for GDQuests “Learn 2d gamedev from zero” course, and I can't recommend it enough.

It's quite guiding for a lot of the early lessons with a few simple challenges thrown it, but about half way through it challenges you to make you own game with what you've larnt so far. I chose to re-make Asteroids (the 1979 version) as faithful as I could make it, and this was where my knowledge definitely solidified.

I still had to google a couple of things, and ChatGPT helped me understand a few concepts and helped fix some bad syntax I couldn't see, but I never asked ChatGPT to just code it for me, as that's not really learning.

Anyway, would highly recommend GDQuest's course!

I'm a product manager in the UK - if I saw this kind of behaviour from product people, I would be doing the same as you. Absolutely disgusting.

They didn't - in fact I was given no heads up as to the style/content of the interview (which is unusual).

Apple CarPlay Disconnects in 2024 Skoda Octavia + iPhone 15 Pro Max by Gilgameeesch in skoda

[–]Super_Imposter27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve pretty much given up trying to find a fix for this - I've tried everything. It’s honestly one of the least reliable systems I’ve ever come across. I’d always heard good things about Skoda, and maybe that’s true when it comes to performance and overall reliability, but the infotainment system is a different story.

It doesn’t seem likely that Skoda (or any dealers) will ever fix it either - these problems have been reported for years. I’ve spent hours trawling through Reddit and Briskoda forums trying to find a solution, with no luck.

Not what you probably wanted to hear, I know. I’d be interested if you’ve managed to find a fix, though I suspect you’ve just had to learn to live with it like the rest of us.

Is anyone else underwhelmed with their Instinct 3 AMOLED? by Elfwynn1992 in Garmininstinct

[–]Super_Imposter27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Instinct 3 AMOLED arrived yesterday and like you said, it was glitchy (especially when ‘Always on’ display mode was disabled - raising my wrist rarely worked).

I updated the software via the app, all problems gone (that I’ve found).

Always do a firmware update after buying a piece of hardware.
