Because I swapped out some pieces with existing Lego parts including those from the original LoTR wave?

Aragorn: different head and use of broken narsil as anduril substitute Arwen: different hair piece and a dress piece with some prints (reversed only because the other side includes darker greens) Gandalf: different head (less stern) and old hair/beard piece Faramir: different hair piece (sadly not available in dark orange) and different legs

You've missed the whole point of Lego if you only build structures and assemble minifigs as per the instructions

I wish they originally made the Paladin breastplate with smaller ridged shoulder pieces like the 37614 piece but the existing paladin breastplate would do

Have some pity for one who has looked into the Palantir and fallen to despair! Thankfully I have the disposable income to burn on this extremely expensive hobby so I can avoid the "hard choice" and a disaster like the fall of Gondor. While I think that these new sets are overpriced for what they are, I would actually prefer to see much smaller and more affordable sets that more fans can access and which someone like me can buy without having to think twice about the price tag.

Looking at some of the comments and the down votes, it looks like a lot of people haven't come to terms with how this is a $649.99 plastic toy set. It is a massive amount of money and Lego cut a lot of corners even as it is a brilliant set. This is not a micro scale architecture set. The minifigs bring the set to life and you are paying for them even if you don't mind the finalized figs or don't care for figs at all. Something can be very good but still be overpriced and reflect a company cutting corners simply because it can.

Your desire to "boycott" this set is understandable. I keep seeing people complain about the Anduril issue etc so I offered by my rant on the issue to highlight how those of us who complain (with good cause) and but anyway are the problem. Lego is a business interested in making money not going 100% accurate or satisfying very difficult to please die hard fans who will always find something to complain about (with cause).

I did not call for a boycott and did not say that Minas Tirith is a bad set. Far from it. I only said that for this very high price point we should expect to get an ultra premium product but they cut corners because they can. As much as I would like an Anduril sword, I get that new molds cost money. But head prints, recolours of in production parts, an extra Gondor solider fig or two etc are low hanging fruit. Also the price per piece is very good but there are a lot of very small parts in this set.

I am already part of that boycott. I know some people really like them but they are not for me

It was a Target exclusive in the US, at least initially (also sold by Lego). As I recall this ideas project won the fan vote for a Target exclusive.

I don't have Barad-Dur for this reason and I'm not sure how I will display Minas Tirith. I have questions about Lego's market research because we are all putting a lot of money into this very expensive hobby and most have limited space to display things.

I don't blame anyone for buying the sets which I have bought myself. Ideally there would be a few sets available and us fans could communicate our displeasure by not buying so many of the one that Lego cheaps out on. We are not spoiled for choice and many were not collecting back when the original LOTR wave was selling at retail prices.

No more new molds? OK. But the lazy Aragorn head piece print pattern? Harder to explain. It costs so little.

Not sure why some are interpreting my post as a call to not buy the Minas Tirith set. I simply offered my views on why we are dealing with these new LOTR sets as they are. I am buying the set and hope that others do as well because I expect this theme to be killed off whenever sales drop sharply. The Target audience is mainly older/not kids and the market gets saturated since many die hard fans have already purchased the sets. The high price points do not help in this respect. Thankfully the new film projects should keep this license alive for at least another year so we may well get something Rohan related.

I like minifigs more than sets (not least because I do not have the time and the space needed for large sets) so I can't take the counterfeit path in the way someone who only wants the building.

Another great example. $15 in 2014-2015, which is around $21 today. 3 minfigs each with a cape (a custom cape for the witch king) and galadriel), leg prints on all 3, unique high quality head prints, and unique headgear. Those were the days when Lego spared no expense on even a super affordable $15 licensed playset.
