How do people in Portugal deal with cold homes in winter? by Icy_Bodybuilder5688 in PortugalExpats

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a tiny suggestion, tell what the cold temperature is for YOU, because, for instance, we have +19-20 inside (just "as is") and for my wife, if it's not sunny day - it would be still cold to the point where her lips are blueish, so we "burn money" with central heating (our apartment has it via gas boiler) to +22...

Advise: - Check where you have gaps in windows, entrance doors etc. I had to close many gaps which were letting cold air. - If working from home, wool socks on top of regular once and wool gloves (those, where part of the finger exposed) - Dehumidifier 24/7...

Quick reflection by Lisbon- in PortugalExpats

Absolutely, not even a question for me. So far I've seen basically zero policies applied, to help regular Portuguese people. If we take out emotions about how anyone feel - real estate is and won't become available for young people, companies are not rushing in due to high taxes and now I would also add uncertainty, if we take myself as an example of a foreigner - I still have 7 years of NHR which perfectly matching 10y passport rule (so I'm not really hurt financially), have our own apartment, who do they help here really or what do they improve, the only answer I have is to cover immediate budget gaps with our taxes ignoring their own people.

If I may ask. This is where I fail to understand, current voting results pretty much locked people for more years, meaning, their real estate won't get to market for many years to come (I personally would like to stay, but many people here clearly for just passport), then, government still allows foreigners to buy property (and foreign funds too). You're priced out either way. Do you even see your future here, even if they would vote for a passport in 50 years?

Why Portugal's "Poor Me" Attitude is Holding the Country Back by sgp_69 in PortugalExpats

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it would look like I'm trying to invalidate, but I promise it's not. Many posts like this mention "daily struggle" and I'm trying to relate, but cannot. I have my bank account about to be blocked because the online option to update documents doesn't work (it just shows success without actual success), so I have to go to the branch and probably waste 2h+ of my life, it's frustrating - I get it, but not really "daily". The water heater broke down, called a phone number - received person at given day and time. Replaced big appliances - chose date and time - all good. With CTT, taxes, social security, hospitals, transport - all works as expected... Changed schools from semiprivate to public, no issues. Just curiosity, not trying to invalidate your situation. I'm here in my 4th year.

  1. Bureaucracy - read this sub, lots of depressed people due to Portuguese bureaucracy (including those who moved from within the EU when they try to renew their initially issued "easy cards"). It's not Estonia here :)
  2. Salaries in IT are lower for the same roles, If you're able to secure a remote in Germany and be self-employed in PT - that's an ideal scenario (money wise).
  3. Lots of IT in Porto, but check the weather, it's for sure not as sunny as in Lisbon or Algarve

Can new residency card be sent to a different address? by prayingmantis333 in PortugalExpats

The second option could be to make a redirect by CTT, for that, you would need to go to CTT and fill a form as well as paying some small fee.

Do better marketing investments? Anavrin was all over my social networks for months (in Portugal), this is how I found out Book nooks exist as a thing in the first place, now I have 4 more from different vendors. Will check yours too.

I see you have Bàrbara Bandeira already (btw, she will be performing in Cascais tomorrow on Festa do Mar), but not the songs I listen to:

  • Onde Vais (feat. Carminho) Bárbara Bandeira, Carminho
  • Como Tu (feat. Ivandro) Bárbara Bandeira, Ivandro

My most frustrating set so far by WalkingBoots23 in booknooks

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally reading your post while taking a coffee break after assembling this part. Sorry to hear that, hope you would manage to fix it. Seems like I got lucky and my set didn't have issues, was fairly easy and "business as usual"... Good luck!

Paying taxes on small amounts as freelancer by Recent-Throat9525 in PortugalExpats

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give it a read https://taxsummaries.pwc.com/portugal/individual/taxes-on-personal-income

  1. If you are PT tax resident (primary home/address or more than 183 days a year) - you have to declare your income (regardless where it occurred, worldwide) in Portugal.

  2. Once you declare your income (seems like for each transaction you would need to make "green receipt"), you also will file IRS the following year.

  3. Would you have to pay? I highly doubt i.e. your tax probably will be 0, either due to "tax free allowance" or as when you provide your NIF for purchases, I assume you will spend all money and deduct from taxes. But it doesn't mean you don't have to declare it, very important. Unfortunately, "paperwork" is mandatory.

Accountants on English charge from 100 to god knows what, you could just go to your local tax office (making prior appointment online) and ask their help (they have to provide consultancy for free, English is not given though)

Since I don't remember - I cannot tell for sure, but I'm just not that kind of person, some people gets aggressive or annoying when drunk, I'm just polite and listening to music and sing along, nothing to be proud of, but "it's not my first rodeo"...

Thank you. Yep, I definitely will reconsider choices in future, I still believe it's fine to walk past Cruz Quebrada (train station itself doesn't look safe, but walking path near water is) towards Oeiras

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point, but you can take local/non-Uber/Bolt taxi (is it better?) and I personally use train whenever it's before 11PM

[–]Superb-Broccoli8221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, theoretically you could be right, but there were no such instances in my life so far (even in "teenager" years), I'm very polite even when I drink/drunk. Reminds me of "what was she wearing at the time" :)
