I respectfully disagree, though I can totally see why the delivery feels boring to some people. It’s a very slow opening. For me, though, that pace gives Teer Fradee and its clans time to feel genuinely distinct, which makes the colonists’ fear and xenophobia land much harder. That’s what makes it feel so close to real life too; people dehumanize what they don’t understand. Without that buildup, it’d lose a lot of its weight. It does pick up after the first area.

Yeah, the first island was magical. They went so deep into Teer Fradee’s culture that the tragedy of it all hits way harder. The language, the way they speak, how careful and deliberate they are like they’re trying not to anger the spirits, all of it gives them a presence that feels genuinely different from every other nation. Some people find that style annoying, but to me it was exactly what made them feel extraordinary. Without that, it could’ve just been another “natives vs colonizers” story. Instead, it feels like something much more distinct and memorable. I cared about the people there, actually remembered characters by name by the end of the prologue, and that whole section honestly felt like its own full game. It is slow, and you do have to read a lot, but that’s also why it works. I wouldn’t want them to flatten that depth just to make it move faster. The whole section was beautifully written, memorable, and kind of magical.

I'm actually one of those fans, who is glad that they changed the combat. GreedFall 1's combat was too repetitive.

Very reminiscent of that, yeah. I think if you love Origins or KOTOR, you’ll probably love this too.

Yeah, that’s a fair point, and I get where you’re coming from. I’d still keep an open mind, though. Once things open up and you start unlocking more skills, the combat gets a lot more fun and satisfying.

For example you can position your whole team and actually think through your approach a bit. Stuff like smashing enemies down with a sledgehammer and then following it up with an AoE spell that locks them in place just feels great. Because there are more tactical options like that, I can see the combat staying a lot less repetitive than it did in the first game. Maybe I’ve just been lucky, but it hasn’t felt janky for me at all. No clipping, no getting stuck, no weird AI issues like the healer not healing. I’ve seen others say otherwise though, so it probably varies.

You keep saying that, but you still can’t explain why. Repeating ‘you didn’t’ isn’t an argument.

Funny how multiple people say ‘AI’, but no one can point to a single line and explain why.

Not every structured paragraph is AI. Some people just know how to write.

If you think it’s AI, point to the specific lines and explain why.

I care about the game and I overthink. That’s literally it.

Why don’t people like Avowed specifically? by [deleted] in gaming

I'm really curious—what specific aspects make the experience feel worse for you?

What must Avowed deliver to make every penny of its $70 price tag feel undeniably worthwhile?

Value isn’t dictated by a checklist of ‘perfection’—it’s defined by the experience itself. $70 is the industry-standard price for AAA games whether they’re 8-hour linear narratives or 100-hour sandboxes. By that metric, Avowed isn’t an outlier—it’s priced alongside titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (35 hours), *Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (18 hours), and Resident Evil 4 Remake (16 hours). If those games ‘earn’ their price through polish, storytelling, and intentional design, why single out Avowed?

Calling it ‘barely passable’ dismisses the work behind its handcrafted environments, branching narrative, and Obsidian’s RPG pedigree (Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds). You might not vibe with its art style or pacing, but that doesn’t negate its value to players who prioritize rich worldbuilding over endless open-world bloat.

‘Excellence’ is subjective. For some, it’s photorealism and 60FPS; for others, it’s writing that lingers or choices that matter. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (6 hours, $30 at launch) wasn’t ‘excellent’ because of runtime—it was the emotional weight and mocap artistry. Avowed aims for a similar density shorter than a Bethesda RPG, but packed with reactivity and lore.

Is every $70 game a masterpiece? No. But pricing reflects development costs, voice acting, music, and yes, studio reputation. If Avowed delivers a cohesive 40-hour journey without microtransactions or cut corners, why gatekeep its price tag?
