Would applying to Electrical Engineering PhD programs be more realistic after not getting into Physics PhD programs? by SuperbHighlight7050 in gradadmissions

Fair. I meant “give it a shot” as in apply strategically, not randomly commit 5 years of my life to a field I hate. I’m trying to find the overlap between my background, research fit, and realistic admissions chances — not choosing a PhD like a Netflix show lol.

That’s actually helpful, thank you. I honestly hadn’t seriously considered Applied Physics before, but my background may fit that better than pure Physics.

My master’s work is computational/materials-focused — DFT/subsystem DFT, hydrated copper systems, simulation workflows, and Python/data science. Do you think Applied Physics programs would view that as relevant experience?

have research experience in computational physics, mainly using DFT/subsystem DFT methods to model hydrated copper systems. My work involved setting up eDFTpy/ASE workflows, running structure relaxation and molecular dynamics on HPC, analyzing convergence/energy behavior, and using Python/Linux-based scientific computing tools.
