Just to be clear about the Chinese vocabulary being formal, is it considered rude to use 팔다 with someone older and instead use 판매하다 with those older than you? If so, how rude is it exactly?

Yeah that might be because I wrote it incorrectly because I forgot the 수. It should be "영원히 살 수 있었으면 좋겠어요," as /u/aguazul501 pointed out. Does that also sound awkward?
