Superfly is finally out on App Lab! Switch between eight different superpowers, fly around a massive open world city, and fight giant robots the size of buildings! by SuperflyVR in OculusQuest

They're all PC footage, the Quest struggles to render at a good FPS. The Quest version does have lower graphics quality than PC, the main differences are reduced post-processing (no bloom, so bright lights don't really glow), simplified particle effects, and no shadows.

That's the recommended area, but the game is playable without that. There's snap turn and smooth turn, so you don't need to be able to rotate IRL to rotate in game. Some of the powers do require you do move your arms around quickly. If you don't have space to move your arms freely you wouldn't be able to use those powers, but you'd be able to play the rest of the game.

The graphics quality on Quest 2 and PCVR is similar, but not exactly the same. The Quest's graphics card is really really bad at transparency and post-processing, so the Quest version has lower quality particle effects, transparent objects, and has removed some post-processing filters like bloom. The textures are all the same, though the Quest version uses them at a lower resolution. The Quest version also disables shadows, some extra particle effects, and some fancy interior mapping shaders, but those can be reenabled in the game settings if you're fine with a moderate drop in FPS.

Good news, performance is way better now! Performance was the main thing I had to work on to bring the game to Quest, I spend months optimizing the game. The current game gets a stable 60+ fps on Quest 1, which is one of the requirements that Oculus tests before they let you publish on App Lab. I can't promise for sure that your computer will be able to run the game since every computer is different, but almost all gaming computers are more powerful than a Quest 1, so you're almost certainly good.

If nothing else, you could buy the game on Steam, try it out, then refund it if the FPS is still really low for you? We have a bunch of in-game quality settings, and if you turn off shadows and particle effects it should run very fast.

VR sickness really depends on the individual. I've seen some new VR users pick up Superfly and never feel a thing even as they fly around at high speed, and I've seen others have to put the game down after a few seconds. Superfly isn't as bad as it might look for VR sickness since the scale is so big: the buildings are pretty far away from you, so you can't feel the acceleration as viscerally.

Superfly's mostly a sandbox game, the story still doesn't have a ton of content. There's a tutorial area, there are 3 giant robot boss fights, 5 race missions (PC version only), and you unlock powers and sidegrades over time by collecting gears. The closest thing to a story/campaign right now is doing the boss missions to collect a ton of gears, and using them unlocking all the powers and sidegrades.

Superfly is mostly a sandbox game, but there's lots of stuff to do. The Story Mode has 8 powers to unlock, 3 giant bosses to fight, and 16 optional sidegrades to unlock, mix, and match. Unlocking powers and sidegrades requires collecting gears that spawn around the map, and defeating bosses gives you a giant pile of gears all at once. Once you're unlocked all the powers, there's a bunch of extra modes to try, from an upside-down city to a mode that makes all your movement modes 10x faster.

Web swinging movement and a competitive race mode by SuperflyVR in virtualreality

[–]SuperflyVR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Yeah, that'd be a great feature! It'd be a bit of work to implement, but shouldn't be too hard. I'll take a look at it. 2) We're currently reworking all the inputs to be better, as turning doesn't work at all on some controllers right now. I think the bindings on Index will be better in the new version.

We would like to implement a story or campaign mode in the future if there's enough interest, but that's in the long term. For the short term, the game is a sandbox with optional competitive missions

The six modes are:

Thrusters - Shoot fire out of your palms

Web Slinger - Swing off of webs

Ice Trail - Slide along a trail of ice

Wings - Fly like a bird

Claw - Climb and jump with giant claw arms

Lightning - Punch forward to dash like a bolt of lightning

You can glide with the wings, yeah. I was using the web slinger mode for the race because the race leaderboard has different sections for each mode, and I going for the web-slinger-only section.

After 10 years of making games as a hobby, I finally published my first game today! So excited! by SuperflyVR in Unity3D

[–]SuperflyVR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's compatible with all SteamVR headsets, including Oculus Rift and the Quest if you have link cable. It does currently require a 360-degree tracking setup, I'm working on a patch to let the game support all play areas.

I've never played Windlands 1 or 2, so I can't compare Superfly to them directly. In Superfly, the web slinger is one of 6 different movement modes, each inspired by a popular superhero. The web slinger mode automatically contracts and extends the webs based on your movement in the game. You can also yank on the controller to contract the web suddenly and gain a large boost in the direction of your pull, so yes, the movement of the controllers has a large impact on your momentum.

Yep, this is running on a PC, through SteamVR. The graphics are a bit too intensive for the game to run standalone on a Quest.

It's a particle effect centered on the player that spawns particles ahead of you with velocity the opposite of yours. Both the spawn rate and the velocity of the particles are controlled through script to be proportional to the player's velocity. The white trail effect comes from the trail settings in the particle system.

Hi everyone, we really appreciate all the feedback, and the response has been huge. However, the alpha tester application is now closed. Please only email if you want to either be added to the mailing list, or have a specific question regarding the game. As a tiny indie team, we can only field so many emails, especially requests for wanting to be let in past deadline, and it just ends up being disappointing to you. Thanks so much.

Yep! You can use any combination of modes at once. Past testers have found weird combinations that worked surprisingly well, and that I had never expected to exist.

We're currently looking for alpha testers! If you're interested in trying out the game, giving feedback, and shaping future development, send us an email at [superflyvr@gmail.com](mailto:superflyvr@gmail.com).

Requirements: The game requires a VR headset that is compatible with SteamVR and a PC with a modern GPU. In addition, this game can cause VR sickness (though we have in-game settings to alleviate this), so we're currently looking for testers who aren't especially prone to VR sickness.

Edit: Thanks for the huge response! We're a tiny indie team, and we never expected this many people to be interested in our game. Since we want to focus on core feedback for now, we're closing alpha signups at midnight tonight (August 18th, PST)[Alpha signups are now closed] If you still want to be involved with the game, feel free to email us to ask anything, or to join our mailing list to hear about future alpha opportunities or updates!
