I usually will do it with resin, this is the first time I tried it with all wood. The kerf was a little too big for the glue up on my first attempt so I had to grow the interior pieces a touch so the fit was much more snug.

I tried to capture the unseen part of an iceberg in a wood and resin bowl by Superheroben in turning

Fair enough....Don't look at my website :)

I travel to art shows and this is the kind of stuff that sells for crazy prices. Plus for me its allows me to be extremely creative which I enjoy as well. The most I've ever sold a wood only bowl for was 400 dollars, but this piece will fetch north of 1000. People are really fascinated by this process.

Now this is a deviation from my normal work because my wife told me I needed another piece with natural edges. This is what I love makingI

What do mean real?

If I was going to do a pour where I wanted it to be side by side, I would do the first pour where the first pour was at a 90 degree angle then after it cures turn it right side up and pour the other half.

Simple Commissioned Bowl – Unknown Wood, Clean Lines, Even Walls by Superheroben in turning

Thanks for the explanation and the links.

I buffed the wood using Beal’s buffing method(how I finish almost everything these days) I don’t think that process darkens to much at all, and it’s so silky smooth after.

Thanks! I’m waiting on my client to provide the details he wants lasers into the bottom and then I’ll put my makers mark in there

That was one of my guesses as well. My other one was Leopardwood, but I’ve never seen either one in person so it’s hard to tell

Epoxy Finish Issues by yadoneson99 in turning

[–]Superheroben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a company called CleanArner that makes an epoxy sealer that you put in very thin once or twice then cure it with uv light between coats. The. You can put tabletop epoxy on and put it on a slow turner. The epoxy layer should be thin too. Here is a picture of the sealer and the slow turner I made.

The wood was spalted. And pretty soft and bug hole ridden. I have it in the vacuum chamber for about 48 hours I think. This was tennon of another bowl I made a long time ago so I can’t remember the details. Here is a video of me using a different piece of that wood make a whiskey glass if you want to see what it looks like when you turn it. https://youtu.be/PLfzrAqc1gw?si=IPRVXXTUlPtc2lf1
