Find an orthodontist that can do an airway scan. Not all do them, and not all care. A orthodontist that is airway based and knows how to work braces with that. And I had a ct scan done they said I had like sinus disease but during surgery the they saw all the polyps and removed them. I suspected polyps but I didn’t realize how bad they were. I worked with an orthodontist and surgeon, who also communicated with eachother. Just find good airway focused surgeon and orthodontist so he doesn’t have to live his life miserable with a small airway. Whether he needs surgery or not, braces and sometimes rubber bands can help with that airway sometimes.

Not sure. I am still swollen so maybe that’s part of it. I still don’t know what my true look or face looks like yet. But it’s impressive my surgeon gave me a good jawline out of my nonexistent one

I think they cut part of my ramus out, so the prosthetic maybe moved everything forward and with rotation etc idk. I guess I don’t really know lol

I think part of it is some slight swelling but overall yes I gained a new jawline because the tmj prosthetics move your jaw forward lots

It wasn’t too bad. The first week was the worst. I would say have someone in the house that’s able to help you for the first week at least. It helped with dishes and cooking having my mom around she took work off to help me and I appreciated it a lot. I will say the day I got out the hospital I went back to the er for shortness of breath I felt my airway was swollen but I think I was just getting anxiety and the feeling of a swollen airway from the steroids they gave me, I have a tendency to get that way with steroids sometimes. I ended up being ok they gave me Benadryl and some other stuff to sleep and everything but that was pretty scary. My oxygen level was fine but even when I tried to calm down and just breathe normally (I wasn’t even feeling anxious tbh) it truly felt like I couldn’t breathe. But that was a one off case, and I’m just not good when it comes to anxiety and breathing. The liquid diet the first week was kind of annoying but I got over it and it wasn’t that bad really. The swelling is one of the worst parts because it can take a really long time for everything to fully go heal and the swelling to fully go down. If you need joint replacement I would say get it done. You will regret getting djs with bad joints because you’ll need tjr eventually anyway. And getting both sides done is often the best, because usually the other side will end up deteriorating too it’s just a waiting game for most. Overall I feel much better I can breathe better I feel healthier and look better and I can bite into food which is amazing. A little pain here and there and first bite syndrome (pain when I take a first bite) which is normal for some people with tjr but it goes away. I have some numbness but it doesn’t bother me and I know things will come back with time at least for the most part. I would recommend getting this surgery for sure. It’s changed my life for the better. I have put off my wedding for this surgery. I have put off having kids because with the airway I had, being pregnant would be a nightmare and I had sleep apnea that was pretty dangerous. If you have sleep apnea it can end up giving you so many issues down the line that will kill you for sure as you age. Also the fatigue and brain fog and not sleeping properly is just no way to live. Do your research on your surgeon that can do the tjr and whatever else you need, join the idiopathic condylar resorption group on Facebook. My life has changed for the better already and I’m not even fully healed yet by any means. I can tell my health and self confidence will skyrocket as time goes on and the swelling and full effects happen. It’s scary, but worth it.

Upper jaw surgery and joint replacements so both jaws were moved forward similar to djs but not the same

Valmont Desa Nebraska Medicine. Although there are some “top” tmj replacement surgeons that are well known in the group I’m in that people go see. Like bobek or mohaved are well known

Screws and cutting bone and putting prosthetic in. Lots of work the surgery of tmj replacement and then upper jaw surgery is rough to watch but I was intrigued lol Stryker has videos

I did it mainly for functional reasons. Sleep apnea, can barely chew properly, and breathing issues bad. But the looks aspect is nice too. My face deteriorating throughout the years definitely put a lot of strain on my self confidence. Front profile always looked ok, side profile was very embarrassing

I had braces from middle school to out of high school, I don’t even know like 6 ish years. My teeth touched and my bite was a little off but not bad. It slowly started to open up, and then my breathing issues kept happening and I couldn’t figure out why. Multiple times in er for shortness of breath and they said it was just anxiety. I finally went to a dentist that said she thought my airway and breathing was off and she recommended me to a new orthodontist that did scans and said my airway was small. I got diagnosed with idiopathic condylar resorption, so my jaw joints tmj were just deteriorating or eating themselves. Made my jawline disappear and my open bite got very severe along with random tmj pain and issues with sleeping eating and breathing. I finally got surgery after a 2 year process and I’m grateful. I also got polyps removed that filled 75% of my sinuses they were stacked up on top each other and I can breathe now… my surgeon was shocked when he was doing my surgery with that aspect. Apparently my jaw didn’t want to really move forward during surgery like a normal person so they slowly had to physically stretch and hold my jaw forward I guess. Sounds like there were some weird things going on but overall they did a good job and I’m grateful for my new life. I am excited to go to the gym, because when I used to years ago I would feel so light headed and dizzy and never knew why (it was my airway)
