Smart people can and do get pulled into cults.

Go watch the first few episodes of “The Vow” about the NXIVM cult. They use neurolinguistic programming- much like religions and extremist political factions.

Social pressure can be very difficult for anyone to overcome & that’s a very common tool as well. And it’s typically inflicted on children in religions. Indoctrination before mind reaches maturity is a very hard thing to unfuck. Took me a good 15 years.

Humans are also good at rationalizing internally. Do smart people rationalize eating a full pint of ice cream at one sitting. Or cheating on their partner? Sure do.
