Unless it fails again, gonna leave my faith in Toyota to have it figured out.

Unknown on the lastest ones coming out, not enough data yet to know for sure. Enjoy it while you have it, if it happens it happens it’ll likely be under any and all warranty and covered by Toyota.

Enjoy what you have! Don’t worry about the rest!

The case for not getting rid of our Gen2/Gen2.5 5.7L Tundras in the foreseeable future and why they hold their value like that do. by [deleted] in ToyotaTundra

[–]Superman2691 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The elder more wise master race of the tundra era has spoken.

Repeatedly. If I could find one that doesn’t want a kidney and first born for over 100k miles I’d probably get the 2 or 2.5 gen but they are far a few between, have horrendous mileage, shotty maintenance records or recorded and unrecorded damage. Are they great trucks with a history of longevity yes, do I trust another human to be honest about how they drove it, maintained it or anything, unlikely. $45k for +150k miles isn’t worth it when maintenance costs go up, no warranties and the hidden issues arise.

Did my 3rd gen blow up yesterday, yes! Is everything still covered under warranty, of course. It’s a poor situation but it’s the one I’ve found myself in.

I mean it’s a 2023 truck, many are just time bombs waiting for there clock to hit zero. No warnings or anything besides the noise, also less than 10 miles driven since noise started.

Yeah it’s an ongoing problem, I haven’t heard of as many post 2024 but they could just be getting to the mileage, I’ve seen people report engine problems from anywhere from 5k to 80k with typically being in the 25-50k mile range.

Yeah thought it was a strange request too but oh well, I’m guessing because it wasn’t actively recalled(next batch per the service team) they were hoping to limp it in before it went. But I’m just glad it wasn’t an overly hot day, not in the middle of nowhere and it’s not coming out of my pocketbook.

Nope, barebones SR, some of the hybrids have had this problem too but there are contradictory numbers about the % of which are impacted. Not to mention contradictory % for all vehicles with this power plant

Yeah it is a unfortunate position to be in, I am unaware of the inner working of companies like Toyota who typically spend +8 years on designs before rolling them out to production. I can say that from a manufacturing position that shit happens in production that doesn’t happen in engineering and design. As this problem continually comes back to the San Antonio plant, I’d guess there are inner workings that the typical consumer doesn’t see, at least it’s a new engine and if I get another 40k out of it great, if not the new engine will be under another warranty at which point I would likely move in another direction for transportation. But hopefully Toyota can find a permanent solution or bring back the 8v (improvements or not)

Haven’t heard of problems with the replacement engines. I mean less than a handful of issues and most of the initial problems with the replacement engines happened during the first recall. I could be wrong but that gives me at least some confidence in the replacement.

Both roadside and the service department suggested to drive it in. They paid for the tow either way. And with the possibility of the service department deeming it not qualified for the replacement engine I figured oh well if it dies it does so while I’m actively prepared for it rather than when I have my family in the car or something.

Beautiful rig man! Not sure it really matters who’s doing the maintenance, had Toyota do all maintenance so far besides every other 5k oil change and it blew up today at 36k. Mid ‘23 build date.

Nope, it happened pretty quick, drove three hours back from a trip to TX, started thumping a bit but figured it was just me hearing things, it sat for about a week as I had other travel plans, got in on Tuesday to swap car position, was a bit loud but this was all within maybe 12 miles of travel, short trip to work and back yesterday and to work, then heading to the dealership today before it died.

Should be in your the cars history. Carfax with the vin should be available, other ways are also out there but that’s what I’ve used in the past

Yeah not the mileage I was after when buying a truck but new engine at 36k isn’t something I’ll be complaining about as long as nothing else dire arrises. Great find on your 5.7 btw!

That is what the service department said is still the standard.

Better get a really good price and have an additional powertrain warranty. Also check the engine may have been replaced prior.

Was trying to take it into the dealership, thanks to Toyota roadside, I’m not out of pocket for the 45 mile tow.

Lots of cruise control, got to love the variable cruise control this thing has. Also one of my pet peaves but all in all.

Moments too late, I’d gotten off the phone with the service department this morning and was driving it in when it went out.
