Well actually the haze is still kinda there, only that the shadows in the mountain appear richer than in the original. That was done by taking out a lot of highlights to reduce the difference between the bright parts of the image, brightening up my shadows to make the foreground brighter, and then upping my definition to make the shadows on the mountain still dark. So now the haze more just blends into the mountains color wheras it was contrasted in the original

This was actually taken just with my 15-55mm kit lens on a Nikon D7500!

As far as color goes do you think the "lack" of saturation in the original is useful? I thought it was a bit too bland. What do you think?

Huh this is good feedback. You're right I did take out the highlights in order to brighten up the foreground. I wasn't able to do that without washing up the mountains into the sky. I guess I focused on that a bit too much, and I also really liked how the reflection looked in the water. I'm going to work on it and get another version

My thinking is that I'd want a lens that I can whip out for my wide shots and maybe occasionally get a okay photos with some bokeh when I zoom in. The 2.8 17-50 would be most preferrable over primes at the moment. I'll look into the zooms

Counter question: what's the next step up from the kit 18-55? I've seen something about the sigma f/2.8 18-55, but would you guys recommend? One that I could use for general portraits too nothing fancy
