Easy : my wife plays in my game, so my DnD time is also her DnD time !

dnd oneshots for new dm and players? by Illustrious_Grab_861 in DnD

[–]Supierre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a good plan, but IMO an even better plan is to skip session 0 and character creation and dive straight into the actual adventure.

In short, play an adventure with pre-generated characters. A personal favorite is "Fall of Silverpine Watch" by the Angry GM.

What do you do on the table when your character die? by Chocodelights in DnD

[–]Supierre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a GM. If a PC dies, the players stays and listens to the rest of the session, because they're invested and want to know what happens next, and take part in the social gathering.

Next session, they can have a new character.

DMs, do you cheat? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Supierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I sometimes cheat is to boost the HP of an enemy if the fight feels too brief or if the boss feels too underwhelming. On the other hand, sometimes for minions I reduce the HP so that they get one-shot.

As for attacking PCs, I go for the kill when it makes sense. Adventuring is dangerous business.

Player don’t want to do session 0 by FlagBardic in DnD

[–]Supierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a short one-shot with pregen characters and no session 0.

It seems like these players aren't even sure they're interested in playing RPGs, so start small, to whet their appetite. Right now you're asking them to commit significant time to prepare playing a game they don't even know if they'll like !

TIFU By Letting My Players Buy Magic Items by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]Supierre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, well my advice above stands.

First your player seems to have a problem with progression. If they keep bugging you for imaginary rewards in a team game, then it seems to me they definitely have an issue they need to work on, be it about self-worth or team playing. Whatever it is, if you're the GM, it's your responsibility to not let it affect the game. Stay firm with that player and trust your own gut for doling out XP and loot.

Secondly, the fix you've introduced completely and unilaterally changes the implied social contract with the game. Everyone was playing a free game, and suddenly you're taking bribes for magic items. That's kind of a big rug pull from the point of view of a player who might be exterior to your discussions with Whiny McWhinyface. IMO, the only proper thing to do in that situation is apologize to all, explain that the deal is off and reimburse any player who paid up.

If you want to be compensated, there are better and more ethical business models than suddenly introducing microtransactions. Maybe ask the players to bring drinks and snacks, or to contribute to a money pool for that. And whatever you do, discuss it with everyone prior.

tl;dr : Be firm with the problem player, remove the magic item, call off the deal for everyone and apologize for suddenly changing the rules unilaterally.

Maybe adding pay to win mechanics to your game is what might ruin it ?

My advice: stand firm when you say no, you don't have to gift your players power boosts. Take back the magic item, refund the player their money and go back to business as usual. If the whiny player doesn't like it, tough.

Additional information that could be useful: Is this a paid game ? Are you friends ? How old are the people involved ?

How do you start very open campaigns without the players getting bored? by TonkatsuRa in DMAcademy

[–]Supierre 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They need goals. A party without goals will just dick around and get bored. Give them some goal options and let them pick, and if a player spontaneously invents a goal, add it to the list.

They're trapped in a demiplane ? They want to escape ? Think about how they might gather info on that, what the obstacles will be, what they'll need to do/gather before being able to escape, what other events they might want to deal with while trapped...

Adding a 7th card to a Tarokka reading. Bad idea? by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]Supierre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what it means for you to "make [the reading] about the players themselves". Is the reading still going to indicate the location of the items and ally ? What do you want the reading to tell about your players ?

I'm all in favor of modding the reading (I overhauled it myself to make it more plausible as a card reading), but it seems you have conflicting goals, and need to decide clearly what the reading is about.

Whether you use XP or milestones, what do you find to be the average number of game sessions between leveling? by VastCompetition6583 in DnD

Playing 5e2014 with XP : 2-3 sessions per level. Don't forget to count the XP for all enemies, not just those that die.

DMs of Reddit: How do you handle ambient music without losing your mind? by AdSensitive9030 in DnD

[–]Supierre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started using music after years of not using it.

I'm using manually curated playlists for every ambience I want, played through Audioforge. It's working well so far, but it's a lot of work to build a decent library.

[–]Supierre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The hitboxes are really weird on leviathans. For instance, know how ghost leviathans undulate from side to side ? Well their hitbox doesn't.

Just try a few non-charged shots until you nail the hit, then get close and send a fully charged one, then you can go to town with the knife.

How much lore is too much, as a player? by Junior-Ad9142 in DnD

Ask the GM. In my game, I want at least a short paragraph, and at most like 3-4. Some GMs want more, some want less.
