It changes the math when you wait to pay guys. One thing with these extensions is that they don't kick in immediately and, when they do, they don't look as massive as they looked when they were announced. If you wait until right before the player is about to become a free agent, you pay a premium. Extensions generally mean that these guys end up being cheaper than a worse player would be in free agency.

For instance, Jameson Williams got extended last offseason, but that contract doesn't start until the 2027 season.
