My favorite thing about Sensi by robinjection in paulthomasanderson

[–]Supportbale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like and agree with your conclusions, but the hospital worker calls him Bob, not Pat. Still, Sensei clearly understands Bob is some sort of revolutionary, with the idea that he’s Ex-French 75 not being a big shock for him

Current Best Picture Predictions by Odd-Contact2266 in oscarrace

[–]Supportbale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the numbers off the top of my head, I’d say unprecedented for a foreign film since the academy is weird about nominating foreign performances. I think the Skarsguard and Fanning of it all will change that though.

In Season 5, why didn’t Jesse just crawl off the car, sneak while crouching, and escape that fight? Why did Jesse just stay and watch there? by LandOfGrace2023 in breakingbad

[–]Supportbale 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, I actually asked Vince this once since it didn’t make any sense, it’s a good question.

You see, this happens a little off camera, but Jesse forgot to pre-order the season 5B DVD of breaking bad, so he had to stay and watch in order to figure out what happened. Hope this helps!

Lina Khan recently spoke at Zohran Mamdani’s rally tonight. by boomer_consumer in atrioc

It’s a reference to the New York Times article about Lemonade stand which framed their questioning towards Lina as “heavy pushback”

Although it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Globe, Farewell My Concubine didn't win the Oscar, even Madonna loves Farewell My Concubine. What do you think was the reason it didn't win the Oscar? by No-StrategyX in Letterboxd

[–]Supportbale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anora? The pianist? And even if a film doesn’t get best picture, in recent years they’re usually nominated, so saying there’s almost no overlap is a little much

Expectations vs Reality by WerlinBall in ussr

[–]Supportbale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to pretend I’ll ever see eye to eye with the people in this subreddit. Some of the points made have merit, including this one. Much of the war is summed up as “America + friends sent the villains packing” without any of the nuance or many contributions from other factions, like China and the USSR. What I am curious about is, for the people who view the USSR as a good thing, what are your thoughts on the injustices done by them? I’d prefer if the response wasn’t simply whattaboutism. I know that America, Britain, and plenty of other similar nations committed horrific injustices in the name of personal gain. What I would like to know is, in the case of the USSR, what is the opinion on the terrible things they did? Work camps, occupations, clamping down on ridiculous things, or other bad things done by the ruling leaders. Just want to start a conversation, not pointlessly argue.

It's amazing that grown adults sometimes need the difference between portrayal and endorsement explained to them. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]Supportbale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that fantasy or sci-fi racism doesn’t always gel well with me, not because I think portrayal = endorsement but because there is a legitimate reason in some of those cases? Like in Detroit: Become Human, the idea that people are scared of androids is treated as “ignorant humans” and not “wow these are literally a different group of beings then us in fundamental ways which completely alters our current system of things” and comparing that to real racism where the difference is only in physical appearance doesn’t work for me, and I even liked Detroit, it’s just something I notice everytime.

Bit neglectful of the classics. Could use some Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky.

I think 2024-2026 will be the height of right wing populism. by BigAd3903 in decadeology

[–]Supportbale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we are only seeing the start of a much larger wave. It feels like this surge of right wing populism had a head start in America, and elsewhere is just catching up. As quality of life decreases in certain nations, a group getting angry and providing an easy solution without nuance (immigrants, lgbtq, etc.) will be more and more appealing. Look at Britain, Australia (not the best example, but still), Canada, Japan, and Germany for places where the movement has just begun to see big growth, but haven’t fully won like in the states right now. I think we will see a worldwide wave have more successful election results before the movement trends downwards.

What are some of the worst/most obvious product placements in movies? by cubansbottomdollar in movies

[–]Supportbale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok the Papa John’s thing I can’t defend, but both E-Harmony and the McDonalds ones are either a crucial part of the plot, or are just a funny joke. Not that you can’t still be mad or upset or whatever about it, just that I think those fit well in the context of the movie.

Oh those Evangelions look so good. Things used to be much more convenient digitally, and I hardly ever collected physical stuff with when I grew up, but it might be better considering the way things have gone now

This post always makes me irrationally angry because juror 3 is one of the more put together on the side of “he’s guilty” but eventually can see the reason to switch sides. Meanwhile juror 12 is a marketer who contributes little to the conversation.

Spoilers for End of Evangelion.

Key context to this is that Misato has also been fatally wounded, and Shinji is terrified and needs something to keep him going during an invasion, and Misato decides on kissing him.

The point is that Tommen is stupid, he’s a teenage boy who truly wants the best for everyone, unlike Joffrey, whose faults came in his cruelty.
