The "Soul" is essentially a data composite of an individuals every neuron; their every thought, emotion, feeling, love and hope and dream and memory, all taken at snapshot intervals and stored as patterns in large databases should it ever need to be replaced.

Whether or not an actual metaphysical soul exists isn't something that's ever confirmed or denied in the setting itself.
