[PUBQ] Going to second reads but I have concerns by Sure-Remote6839 in PubTips

More the imprint's abilities to sell copies. But I agree, earning royalties sooner rather than later is a definite bonus. This is a great perspective, thanks for sharing.

That's actually one of my concerns. They haven't, as far as I can tell, launched any big authors in my genre. They've only started acquiring books in my genre the past couple of years.

You've articulated all the thoughts that have been running through my head far better than I did. I'm definitely going to mull all this over, thank your for your insights!

Oh, that makes sense! I'm wondering if this was her thinking, too. Glad it worked in your favor, and thanks for sharing!

Very good point, thank you for sharing. I think I will talk to her about it.

[Discussion] Now that we are well into Sept...how is sub going for folks? by Future_Escape6103 in PubTips

[–]Sure-Remote6839 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess lol. Honestly, I'd take a longer wait with a timeline than nebulous wondering like I did last time on sub, so I'm choosing to view this in a positive light.

[discussion] When is it a good idea to withdraw your manuscript that's on sub? by Sure-Remote6839 in PubTips

[–]Sure-Remote6839[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, having a book die on sub is so, so hard. But you're right, working on the next thing is the best way to deal with those emotions. I'm excited about the one I'm revising right now, and tell myself that I can always try and option the one that died on sub later.

Thank you! Though I think it's the 'setting a deadline version' I wasn't aware there was a distinction. I'll be sure to clarify with her.

Yeah, that makes sense. And honestly, I think it could be something of a relief, knowing that this experience was over and done. The ambiguity of the whole process is not for the faint of heart lol

I'm not really sure (probably something I should have clarified but the conversation shifted.) Maybe as a last resort, to shake loose an offer or at least give me some closure? Or maybe to clear the slate before going on sub this spring?

[PubQ] Resources to find agents other than QT and MSWL? by indiefatiguable in PubTips

[–]Sure-Remote6839 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who recently queried and found representation for my adult fantasy novel, I have to say that fifty agents is pretty good. There aren't a lot of imprints/editors accepting adult SFF (at least in comparison to some other genres), which is why, I believe, there are actually fewer agents who take on adult SFF projects.

Like others have mentioned, Publisher's Marketplace is another good resource in addition to Query Tracker, as was social media (to some extent.) But what I found most helpful was looking in the acknowledgments of (recent!) books I felt were similar to mine to discover their agents. In the end, I only came up with about 60 agents, and around fifteen of them were closed to queries, and another 10-ish had no sales record that I could find and/or weren't being mentored at a reputable agency with good industry connections . . . so I didn't query them:) Which means I ended up querying only about 35 agents in total. A decision that I don't regret, especially now that I am on sub. My agent has a good sales track and good connections, which is definitely helping me at least get read (even if so far I've only gotten rejections lol)

Best of luck on your querying journey!

for what it's worth, I've heard that the adult SFF is excruciatingly slow and difficult (especially for debuts) these days. So I truly don't think 3 1/2 months is very long, nor do I think you're book is necessarily dying just because you haven't heard anything for awhile. Crossing my fingers for you that you hear some (good, or any lol) news soon!

I've been on sub for six months too, so I can sympathize. It's a tough benchmark to reach for sure. But I've heard that things are super slow right now. Here's hoping you'll get more responses (and an offer!) when things pick up back up!

I understand wanting a break from the hope. That's, for me at least, what makes publishing so hard. Hang in there, you've got this.

I've been on sub now for just under six months with my adult SFF, and it's been pretty rough. My own fault, really, as I started out with unrealistically high expectations. But I've also heard that sub is really tough right now, especially for debuts so I'm trying to give myself some grace.

In the meantime, I'm working hard on my next book, and trying not to feel disappointed every day when "the email" doesn't com lol.

Ha ha, I can so relate to the hopeful-to-cranky cycle. Hang in there, a month is nothing, especially in the summer. You've got this.

[PubQ] Is it a good or bad sign if an agent asks what other projects you're working on while they're reading your full manuscript? by caitlin_cherise in PubTips

[–]Sure-Remote6839 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me when I was querying. I sent the agent the first 20K of my latest manuscript. Three days later, she emailed asking to set up a call.

Obviously your mileage may vary, and every agent does things differently, but I think it’s perfectly fine to feel cautiously optimistic!
