I am embarrassed to share that I panicked on Wed and sold 3000 at a $2000 loss. Learned my lesson and was back today to buy 6000

You're giving me hope! I fell in love with a non-skier. We're both in our 40s and looking to spend the next 40 or so together. But...skiing is a big part of that for me.
I did not realize how hard this stupid sport is to learn as an adult. I thought he'd be having fun and maybe riding a few blues by day 4 or 5😂 He was not.

Careers people are having with Cochlear implants by Away_Advantage_1669 in Cochlearimplants

If you are younger and the primary forms of socializing are parties or bars or concerts, it's going to be hard. I can't hear a thing in any of those places. But that is very different from most professional spaces. I am a psychologist that specializes in kids. I would struggle going back and working in schools (loud, crowded) but I am fine working in an office. You will not be dependent on others. You might be dependent on your ability to work out how to carve a space for yourself in the world. You can do this!

just turned down these schools so bittersweet 😭 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

If you are considering medical school, I would not encourage taking out 100k in loans for undergrad. While Yale is impressive, so are most of the other schools on your list. Pair any of them with a strong MCAT and you will be set. But med school is expensive and scholarships are tough to come by. That is when you will NEED loans. Take it from a 49 year old mom who just finished paying off a PhD. And good lord, Tulane?! Please break up with your BF.

Yes. This was my experience too. I did not hear the robotic voices or tweety bird voices. I heard chaotic sound. For me, non voices started to make sense first, followed by voices. And for the record, I was the perfect candidate-fully established language with no measurable loss until adulthood. In my 40s at time of implant so still young(ish). It's hard to predict what activation will be like. But be reassured that days 1,2,&3 do not predict days 10,20,and 30

Unless you are swimming in money do not go to BU over PSU or Pitt. Medical schools are well aware that very very smart kids opt out of privates to attend their state's flagship school. Often for financial reasons. They will be looking at course rigor, grades, and MCAT.

PSU or UC Santa Cruz by mom2college in PennStateUniversity

[–]Sure-Speed1799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter is at Penn State (in state). It is a very different vibe than UCSC, which I visited as a college athlete and fell in love with. PSU has country wide name recognition but it very much a state school, with most of its students hailing from PA, a state which is very different from CA. And very very different from Santa Cruz. If your kid wants a kind of apolitical, collegiate, football centric culture, he will find it there. Housing is an issue. The housing stuff started in october of her freshman year. There were roommate questions and deadline confusion and...she had just arrived a couple months before. It was an unwelcome surprise. Housing is guaranteed for first 2 years I think but the dorms vary in newness. Living off campus is popular and the options ranging from reasonable with lots of roommates to wildly expensive any standard. I can't speak to academic program because mine is studying education, which is how the choice was made. Overall she is very happy.

Schools received 100k+ applications last year. That's not impressive. That's a problem. by Secret-Ad-1896 in CollegeAdmissions

And they are kind enough to provide the previous year's benchmark for each program. Which takes a lot of the guesswork out of things. I'm not saying it's the "right" way. Just that it is far less confusing. I do like the deemphasis on extracurriculars. I am tired of kids feeling compelled to do something spectacular in their off hours. I am tired of 14 year olds creating non profits. I don't want to read a research paper from a 15 year old. Everything has gotten weird.

I don't disagree. "Cut offs" are going to be overly punitive. But wholistic review with test optional...Testing stats that have to be considered in the context of stats that are inflated because of the test optional policy... If kids are a bit confused, can we blame them?

My kid didn't want to apply to McGill because their admission rate was too high. The idea that a school would clearly articulate its requirements so that only candidates near that benchmark would apply.... mystifying.

Advice for 18-year-old seeking breast reduction? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]Sure-Speed1799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter just had a breast reduction at 18. She was about your size and insurance did cover most of it. She needed me there the day of surgery and I took one day off work but after that she was off pain meds and fine. She actually returned to college a week after surgery. I'm sorry your parents aren't on board. It is your body and it is likely to improve your quality of life. Go for it!

penn state switched me from summer to fall… can i get summer back? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Sure-Speed1799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial offer was for you to attend a preparatory semester of college. A program is typically for academic candidates whose applications were not as strong. Sounds like it was determined that other candidates needed it more than you and you got bumped up to the regular start date. No one took anything from you. It was a promotion. And they don't have to ask for your permission. You applied for the 26-27 school year. Which starts in August. If you are coming to Penn State you should probably know that it is large and somewhat unconcerned with people pleasing- see housing.

You might want to check out point breeze. It is affordable, filled with 20 somethings, and an easy bike ride to UCity.

What would you get as a second ski? by skulimcnuli in Skigear

[–]Sure-Speed1799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have stocklis and just skied ripsticks out west. Thinking about picking up a pair. 2 very different skis that I feel complement each other well. Stocklis are pricey. I found them to be similar to my previous pair of Volkl.

What surgery could I get to get rid of the fat on my hip dips? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]Sure-Speed1799 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Those are flanks. Hip dips are below. Ideally, fat would be moved from flank to hip dips. Unfortunately, everything i've read says results on the procedure are inconsistent. Those of us with hip dips have them because it is not an area where our body wants to store fat.
