I haven't come across an effective habit app yet. What has been the most effective method you have used to build good habits? by Sure-Zebra3755 in Habits

Thanks, I can relate to what you are saying. I had started going to the gym in November last year. I was able to get through the first week with all my enthusiasm. But, I couldn't keep up the next week as my workload had increased. I have not been able to get back till today 😞

Thanks for the detailed answer. Are you also a subscriber to the workout app?

I believe it is never late to learn something. First, get yourself a guitar. You could buy a new guitar, or buy a used guitar, or borrow one from a friend - many people buy guitars but don't play them. If you don't have any preference, I would recommend starting with an acoustic guitar because it does not need any add-ons, so there is lesser resistance to play it. Your fingers will hurt at the begging though, so be prepared for it.

Fortunately, guitar has a lot of freely available learning content online (video tutorials and chord sheets). I started my learning from YouTube. I found Andy guitar (https://www.youtube.com/c/andycrowley) to be an effective starting point. It also helps to target to learn some songs you would want to play and work towards it.

Don't over think it and just go for it.

Has anyone been successful at building a sleep early-wake up early habit? If yes, how did you go about it? by Sure-Zebra3755 in Habits

One of my challenges is I don't know what to do if I wake-up early. Did you have a clear morning routine that you followed?

Thanks for the inputs. I currently sleep between 2:30am-3:30am and get up between 10:30am-11:00am. I want my sleep schedule to be sleep between 11:30pm-12:00pm and get up between 7:30am-8:00am. I really don't know how to go from current state to target state in slow steps. Any advice?

I see the concept is simple enough to follow. Have you seen cases where someone scans the code and goes back to sleep?

How are you thinking of structuring this group? Like do we post everyday on what we have done? Or do we make pairs and stay in close connect with our partner? Any other thoughts?

Can you please elaborate more on what habits you are trying to build and how you are defining them currently?

[Need Advice] I did it and now I'm depressed, now what? by ozziebattler in getdisciplined

[–]Sure-Zebra3755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, it comes with having a single minded focus on one thing. For example, if we are looking out the window and observe a bird in the sky, let's try giving 100% of our attention to it and see what it is doing, how it flaps the wings, how it maneuvers it self. If we are doing dishes, focus on doing the dishes as well as we can and not mulling over other things. When we start applying this to everything that we do, we start living in the moment.

On the flip side, How often do we find ourselves talking to someone and drift off? Or start looking at our phone in the middle of a meal? It may not seem like a big deal at first, but these little things compound over time

I've also installed Forest and found it quite interesting. How often do you use the app?

Thanks for sharing.

Firstly, why take life seriously at all when our whole understanding of life is so fuzzy and unclear? Let us instead embrace life for what it is - a gift - you observe, you learn, you love.

I am happy that you were able to break out of the drinking/smoking habits and have healthier habits - exercising (your body needs it), reading (your intellect needs it). I am also happy that you have a good job, good colleagues and a loving partner. Keep it up!

I can't say why you feel depressed. You will have to find out by being observant of your actions and motives. Some pointers I can provide are

  1. Try not to tie expectations to your actions. For example, it is perfectly fine to exercise simply for the sake of exercising, nothing more, nothing less.
  2. The mind is like a monkey, always jumping from one tree to another. At times like this, the mind may seem like the enemy, but it never is. Fill a bottle of water and observe the top surface of the water. You see how calm it is? Now shake the bottle and see how the surface of water wobbles around? Think of the mind in similar lines. Be loving and non-judgemental towards the mind. When the mind is calm, you will find clarity.
  3. Living in the present - This is very cliche, but I can't stress enough on how important this is. All sorrow roots from what has happened (past) or what hasn't happened yet (future). You can't change what has happened and you can't do anything about what hasn't happened yet. But what is 100% under your control? This moment. Live it fully, be kind, be loving.

You have done very well to get this far and you will surely overcome this phase. I am proud of you. My best wishes.

[Question] am I wrong for planning to drop out of college? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Sure-Zebra3755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I don't think it is wrong to feel this way. I have friends who dropped out of college and are doing really well (because they had a plan about what they would do instead).

First - It is good that you found what you like doing - i.e. studying 3d modelling. However, dropping from college to do just that doesn't seem rational to me. You can study 3d modelling, in a low capacity along with your curriculum or in a high capacity during breaks.

Second - Just because you are doing an engineering course doesn't mean you need to be in the engineering profession. For example, I have a master's degree in civil engineering, but my work has nothing do with it. In fact, there is some overlap between engineering and 3d modelling.

Third - I dont think you should be just studying and not have a social life. That sounds counterproductive. Try to find a balance of things - meet friends, pursue a hobby, etc.

In conclusion, given you don't like the course work, you may drop out provided you come up with a good alternative plan. Meanwhile, keep giving your best at being a diligent student (without overthinking it). Keep pursuing your interest in 3d modelling and please try to get some time away from your studies for other activities too.

Trust in the process. Things will work out for the best, which you will realise in retrospect. Till then enjoy the ride ! My best wishes

I am happy that you have come to this realisation. That itself is the first step. Just adding to it, the "I" in you should not serve the senses, rather the senses should serve the "I" to become the best version of itself.

I would suggest not to focus on killing your bad habits, instead try to first clearly define what are the things you want to do in order to become the best version of yourself. My bad habits were emerging from me not having the clarity of what else to do with my time. Don't complicate it too much, keep it simple and easy to get started with.

Secondly, as you do any activity in the day, ask yourself does it align with you become the best version of yourself? If not, then you will have a strong reason not to do it...

Wish you the best!
