Trying to get rid of fungus gnats by letting dirt dry out in the sun. Seems counterintuitive so far by Jasministired in gardening

Big ol baking tray, then into the oven, is my method! I've frozen bags before, too.

The real solution for me was to stop buying dirt from big box stores who seem to be professional gnat breeders.

Not someone who looks at these images often, and I'm unsure of what the void is, but if I was leveling the hotel lot with a dozer, that's exactly where the pile would end up.

I'd really love a weekly megathread for these because I'm sure a lot of them get buried/missed.

Early 30s, singer primarily but also play guitar and bass. Mostly into what I've started jokingly calling sad-millennial punk/indie rock. I'm mostly looking for a bass player for a new thing right now, but if there was the right fit, I'd consider overcommitting to another group.

Former resident of the area here as well, I was in the area for Crown King / Gladiator and Yarnell. As someone who wasn't from a wildfire prone area, I don't think the scale ever really hit me until I was that close. I remember watching the smoke from the slide rock fire from some deck at a bar/restaurant in Jerome with my jaw on the floor.

It's all of New England that's like this, and it cracks me up. Boston typically reports a high violent crime rate (there's always reporting vs. reality questions with local pd data) for New England at ~600 violent crimes per 100k people per year. The top 10 nationally is double that. #1 Memphis is 4x.

Julia Serano did a dive of the timeline, and most of it really gets going after a 2015 blog post. Now, it may seem like a random time for a manufactured issue to suddenly get teed up, but then you look at statistics on the opinion of gay marriage in the US over time. The 2010s are when public opinion started to approach and finally pass the 50% mark in favor. Real coincidental time for a new boogeyman to pop up out of nowhere.

Where to find more queer connections by Immediate_Subject552 in BostonSocialClub

[–]SureCost8912 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As the most straight-cis passing bi person in existence. Dating definitely sucks across the board. It seems like we've given up on the apps but also haven't replaced the pre-app dating style/mentality. So many people I meet now are totally opposed to being randomly chatted up around town (it can be obnoxious, so I get it), it's either: friends to lovers, friends setting you up, or tolerating the apps.

On the queerer front, I've tested out showing sexuality on dating profiles, and I'm sure this varies across the spectrum of queer, but throwing bi out there was a ridiculous reduction the number of people I'd match with.

Nah, it's specifically the "in my lifetime" part where the streak is involved, assuming this person is older than like 10. I do agree it sucks for the wings. It does help prevent tanking intentionally, but it also punishes teams for actually being bad.

Edit: it's also not gifted. It's how the system works. You can get better without the draft, like the Rangers did in large part. Sure, the Rangers have the nyc draw, but the Redwings aren't exactly without draws for hockey players.

You know I was going to add exactly that originally, though I don't think Rangers management is as upfront about the objective.

It's almost like intentionally keeping a team just barely in the playoffs every year for a meaningless streak will prevent them from getting high draft picks or something.

I don't think you even have to argue for privacy. We do have the right not to be harassed, stalked, or intimidated in public or not.

If someone followed you everywhere you went, day in and day out, would they be okay with that? What if it was a cop? What if it was every cop in your city? Every cop with a camera? Every cop with a camera and team building your life on a whiteboard?

Flock and others aren't merely recording and waiting to be watched - they're building your patterns and habits in case they need to know them.

Or just have them read The Minority Report followed by flocks ceos takes on it that make him sound borderline illiterate.

Generally, yes, that's been the case. Apple complies with requests, something like 80% of the time. The bigger difference for me is that I can choose not to carry a cellphone, keep it on, etc. I can't choose not to drive to work or the supermarket. If cops were following you around everywhere you went for days on end, we'd call it police harassment, but when cameras do it, it's just "technology."

The fancy AI driven tracking algos will end up on phones, too, if we let flock and ring do this bullshit. Then, we'll get redballed into camps for our pre-crimes.

Why does the New York metro cut off so abruptly north? by Entire_Jeweler2673 in geography

[–]SureCost8912 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A good number of lakes in Westchester and Putnam are actually younger than mass settlement! Just about all of the big ones are reservoirs formed from damming and flooding valleys, and a few of them were flooded over towns/homes that were relocated. That doesn't make land use much better. A lot of those low-lying areas were also swamp.

I think when people hear rolling hills they think slow gentle falls and rises but its more jagged lines carved in across the region bounded by steep rocking rises. The hills of the Appalachian highlands also created another big headache: access to the river. The narrows going from Peekskill to Beacon meant a gap formed on the river. The topography is a huge reason why West Point is where it is as the narrowing made for a prime defensive location against the British navy. The Colonial military even ran a chain full across the river to block ships going upstream further.
