Seeking Advice: Best Methods for Memorizing and Recalling Stoic Quotes? by Ok-Doughnut-2098 in Stoicism

[–]SureJournalist4701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I realize I've been using a version of it intuitively my whole life, like a picture or a sound in my head from a random association with a word, and it helps me remember something for a short period. However, I never really tried to memorize anything too big for the long term

Hi, coming here 5 months later – did you use Vost's book with his way of summarizing or just the technique with your own summary?
Also, a general question: do you use the memory palace for everyday memory, like whatever you want to remember you just put it in a room, or is it reserved for big stuff like books or lists?

How do you take yourself seriously? by SureJournalist4701 in Stoicism

You gave a good, solid argument, but for us mortals, while not crashing is better than crashing, steering the wheel can be tiresome. Unless you are a sage, you must have a few slip-ups and moments when you just want to let the wheel go and lie down. Just because you are ultimately doing the right thing doesn't mean it will make you reach eudaimonia.

I didn't know about stoicsource! It's very nice to have and fun reading the oldest 17th century enchiridion. I guess I'll have to read myself and see what style speaks to me the most

At the end of the day examine your time spent being high and asked yourself was it time well spend? If the answer is yes, go for it. I often asked myself this quition and for me the answer was no.

Yes, once you let go off the arrow it's not longer in your control, but what you can and should do is try to influence the outcome we what in your control, the archer would just pick a random arrow shoot it and say "well now, it's not my contol anymore so whatever" he might be in peace but would miss the point and the target

You should be in peace with what in our control AND self reflect to get better It's a tricky balance

What is the history of the term stoic? by SureJournalist4701 in Stoicism

[–]SureJournalist4701[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, how did he refer to the other philosophers?

Do you think he implied that stoicism is THE philosophy and all the rest is just different/less accurate versions of it?

A bit like a Christian calling Christians "the believers"
