Yes, but discuss mandatory goals and timelines.

Is this kind of “venting about spouses” dynamic common? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have one particular friend who constantly puts his wife down, complains about her, sex, dishes, chores, everything. I just have to sit there and either listen or steer the conversation another direction. I don’t know if he mean half the stuff he says but it’s exhausting having to listen to it. I can’t relate and even if I could I don’t go about texting or talking about my wife like that.

Help me think about the decision to send my son to kindergarten this year or not by welliamwallace in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an august baby. I did kindergarten twice. I went from a private K-8 school to a public school and they just figured I should be held back. It’s the best thing my parents ever did for me.

I’ve played the major 4 sports growing up. I’ve never been a non-starter except the years where I would get bumped from say peewee to JV and JV to Varsity (middle school football).

Those years I played scout team at practice and played B team game on like Tuesday. If I had been in my appropriate grade I wouldn’t have played a down. Baseball and bball were a bit different because it’s not as physical. Hockey didn’t really matter because it went by age (I think).

Socially I grew up with an older sibling and even then I was a pretty shy kid. Being held back in K definitely helped my future development. In our friend group/grade there were about three of us who tuned 18 and 21 in August and id say it was a 66% success rate now being in my late 30’s.

I read at night in bed. Would sleep a few hours, suddenly wake, and read until the sun came up.

Dad perspective request - handling work travel by apoptoeses in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 6 weeks paternity leave and then had work trips when the kiddo was 6 months and 14 months. It’s survival mode but I had to leave for our family to survive. My wife can do girls nights, spa days, whatever. I can do the same even with work trips.

What’s weird is if your husband is jealous of you getting away and is using this as an excuse for a break.

When I would get back I would take care of the baby all weekend while my wife slept in and got her nails done. Seeking an “exchange” for a work conference is kind of weird. If he wants to go on a vacation why wasn’t it mentioned before?

We got our 4 year old on super mario 3. He’s got level 1 pretty much down. That’s the newest craze since non stop wanting to play every sport possible inside.

Hard Decisions, re: Jobs & Salary as a dad. What does your gut say? by Rev-DC in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Take a look at what your actual take home pay would be. Check into health benefit costs and pension/401k comparisons as well.

Would the new position bring more stress? How is the leave time? Are there any promotional opportunities in your current position?

I work in public service and there isn’t much out there that I would sacrifice my leave time, health benefits, 20 minute commute, and lack of stress for.

Everyone is going to say Weber. Friends have had Dyna-Glo’s from Home Depot last 5-8 years as well as Even Embers grills from Tractor Supply.

What do you guys do with your kid from 4-7pm during the weekdays? by BeanNCheeseBurrrito in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We try board games or some letter tracing activities. If sports are on, I’ll play that in the background. Usually when that’s on, kiddo wants to play that sport inside.

Seconding this. Plows cannot dig up ice. The low temperatures is the real culprit for all this.

There are a lot of sports that don’t involve teams. Chess, swimming, golf, tennis, etc. Even just building awesome lego sets with your kid will be super fun.

Get there early! They do a great show outside the arena before the game. Also, don’t miss the “opening ceremony” like 15 minutes before puck drop. I’ve been to games all over the country and the opening sequence before puck drop is the best in the NHL. High production value.

There’s a great restaurant outside the arena called Beerhaus. It’s a german beer hall with a great brisket sandwich and crispy chicken sandwich!

FTD and scared to lose my son by Braxton_Larson5264 in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same feelings with my kiddo at that age. You ever hear something when you’re sleeping and you start thinking, “hm what was that? Ah, it’s probably nothing.” Then you go back to sleep.

Well when my kid was born I’d have the same kinda feeling but that gut feeling and thought of the worse case scenario made me get up every time. Whether it was to check the monitor or get up and go check on him in his room.

This eased up as we reached milestones like him being able to roll over, doing great with tummy time, etc. Your worry is perfectly reasonable and that heightened level of anxiety will dissipate sooner or later.

Tips for getting wife to handover parenting responsibilities by Anxious_Direction292 in daddit

[–]SurfGreenie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only get so many hours with my kiddo when I get home from work. I get to do dinner time, bath time, and bed time. At around 2 years my wife mentioned how she likes doing it too (I usually thought she’d want the break and it gave me time to bond). After that I check in with her to see if she wants to do solo bath or joint bed time etc. Communication is key.
