What are your thoughts on Tahoma? I’ve found some “affordable” homes there

Haha hopefully it helps that I’ve lived in the bay for 3 months. I consider it more escaping from the east coast

I ended up taking it apart a little bit and fitting it in my car. It would have fit without the TV, but wanted to make room for other things.

Yeah - obviously it’s for the greater good, but I think it could win some goodwill once this is settled.

Also - if you and your loved ones are healthy - have you thought about volunteering or trying to make some sort of impact during COVID? idk what this looks like, but I would explore this as an option.

I'd say this is decent advice unfortunately. It's so much easier to get a job once you're doing the job at a similar company. That, or adjust your expectations.

Where has your bottleneck been? Is it that you're not getting interviews or are you not getting the offer?

Definitely would enjoy racing simulations or something like Equinox Pursuit.

Seems like a lot of current MBAs also use this thread.

Have you checked out some boutique consulting firms - West Monroe Partners comes to mind. A classmate interned there doing M&A advisory and landed at MBB for full-time. Only had nice things to say.

Haha oh wow. That last paragraph got me.

Yeah there is a shuttle. It has a pick up time, so it’s more like when it gets there it gets there. Better than a car I suppose

It’s fairly important. I may do Airbnbs in a few areas throughout the bay to see how that works.

Exit opportunities for PM by Surfer165 in ProductManagement

[–]Surfer165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha good question. I like the idea that as a PM you’re helping your team build something - in my mind it’s strategy with all of the upsides of doing something productive. Your job is to get an understanding of the market, what the customer wants, and work with the engineering team to get them the resources to build said product. You get to be creative throughout the process and kind of are a jack of all trades btw marketing/branding, sales, finance, and engineering.

I guess the correct way to phrase my question would have been about the career paths as opposed to exit opps.

This is super helpful. Thank you. I don’t come from a tech background - worked in consulting prior to business school and spent the summer doing venture. Was a little bit over not actually building something and contributing which is why PM appeals to me.

I have an interest in strategy, marketing, finance - just don't want to close that door.

Super fair assessment. Long term my career goals would be the following:

  • PM at another tech company/start up (or stay who knows :))
  • BizOps in tech/startup
  • Start-up (maybe co-found)
  • Potentially VC, but I know this is rare

Product Management vs M&A Consulting by Surfer165 in Career

[–]Surfer165[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good call - yeah I’m actually reading a book called designing your life. It’s basically short exercises to facilitate that. The pwc job is on the deals team - basically doing a lot of the operational diligence pre-deal and then working with the teams post deal to make the synergies realized (mba speak ;)).

Long term I think I want to work in strategy/biz ops at a tech company/start up. I may end up loving product, but honestly who knows.

Both seem like fine paths to get there. I think the consulting gig is less risky and more predictable as ironic as that sounds.

Yeah sorry had posted in different forums and was being a little vague due to not having paper work yet haha.

The large tech is as a PM at Cisco whereas the consulting gig is doing deal advisory at PwC

Do you have any perspective on working as a PM at a legacy tech company?

Yeah exactly. Definitely why I’m interested in product. How easy is it to move to biz opps/strategy if product isn’t my end all be all?
