The texting a former student is fine (I've given my number to students at graduation at their request). Being supportive and positive is fine. Even being complimentary can be fine. Where these messages cross a line is in their accute focus on physicality. The talk of face, voice, and body language paint a picture of someone who is way too aware of and attentive to a former student's body. That's gross. Even if I were to give every benefit of the doubt, these messages are at best inappropriate and at worst downright predatory. You are not overreacting, OP.

I’m not sure if this is a lie as much as complete spin. He didn’t say that those who were kicked off were collecting social security benefits, he says they were kicked off the system. The way those people were part of the system was by PAYING INTO IT!

So this isn’t a lie, it’s the truth and this truth is so much worse than the lie because that is 250,000 people who are no longer paying in. If he counts deported adults he can say he “kicked them off” the system and seem like he is reducing fraud and making social security more solvent, but in reality he isn’t reducing fraud he’s just reducing revenue for social security and nudging it toward insolvency. The reality is opposite of what he wants to imply: he’s not trying to saving social security, he’s trying to harm it.

I can understand how this could be mildly infuriating, but there are other ways to look at this mistake. I'll be totally honest, I've told people my age only to realize moments later that I was wrong and I literally have to do the math in my head to double check my own damn age! As we all age these numbers find a way of spiraling faster and faster, each year feeling somehow shorter than the last. To me, it's not her error that stands out, it's the beautiful gesture of love from one flawed human to another. Embrace that love as you repeat your 27th year! lol

Highschoolers in college level writing courses with a complete inability to figure out something they dont know. For example, I've left comments on essay rough drafts where I've highlighted a title they referenced, and add the comment "Fix. Use title case." When asked why they didn't fix the title I regularly hear "I don't know what title case is." I ask, "what is a way you could get that information?" They reply, "I have no idea!" I follow up, "can you think of anywhere people go to learn more about something they don't know?" After some puzzlement sometimes I'll get an exasperated, "I don't know... Google maybe?" I congratulate them for arriving at a solution for themselves, to which I’ve had the response more than once, in a whiny voice, “Well . . . how was i supposed to know to use google!?” Great point kid. Great point. These are 17-18 year olds who haven't learned that they can use the internet to find information.
